New Lordsburg councilors elected as Schulz and Bravo

A special Lordsburg council meeting swore in two new members Linda Schulz and Paul Bravo after unanimously approving their names. The session also rejected all three bids to finish the Little League ball field lighting project due to faulty blueprints and readied a corrected bid for March 25 in the Lordsburg Liberal. about $3,500 of $15,000 county recreation funds were proposed for playground equipment.

Oratorical Contest Set For March 26 In Lordsburg

The Lordsburg Optimist Club sponsors its annual Oratorical Contest on Saturday March 26 at 7 p.m. in the Civic Center for students 15 and under from Lordsburg and Rodeo. Three judges and one timekeeper will score time preparation effectiveness and presentation. Public attendance is welcome. For information contact Don Kling at 542-3753.

A meeting of the Republican Party will be held at the Hidalgo County Courthouse on Saturday March 26 at 2 p.m. Officials invite local members to attend and participate in party affairs and program planning.

Lordsburg Move Dives On Capital Outlay Plan

Lordsburg pursues an $880000 capital outlay for a Welcome Center and city parks. State funds cover $150000 with rest funded by Federal Revenue Sharing and local Lodgers Tax. Planned projects include trees, shelters, playgrounds, a water system, a diving board, and park facilities across North Park Short Park Pyramid Park and the Municipal Swimming Pool.

Kindergarten Registration Set At Animas

Animas Public Schools will hold kindergarten registration April 8 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. in room 107 of the new elementary school. Parents must bring birth records and immunization records. Children must be five by September 1, 1983 to start fall 1983. Current kindergarten students will not have classes and should stay home.

Lordsburg Tourist Center Funded by Legislature

The 1983 New Mexico Legislature approved 150000 for a Lordsburg Tourist Center to be placed at the first exit west of town. Gov. Anaya plans to sign the bill. The highway department sought 681000 in their budget, with 92 percent federal funds and 8 percent state funds.

Silver City Lawyer David Lane Seeks District Attorney Post

Silver City attorney David Lane announced his candidacy for district attorney. A former assistant prosecutor from 1979 to 1982, Lane holds a UNM law degree (1975) and a Western New Mexico University bachelor’s (1972). He cites public service and plans to meet district residents before the primary. He served in the Navy Reserve up to lieutenant junior grade, including Vietnam.

Bishop Visits Lordsburg for First Time Confirmation Feast

On March 19 at St Josephs in Lordsburg Bishop Ricardo Ramirez led 32 teens to Confirmation during the Feast of St Joseph. Fr Virgil Florez and Fr Sam Garcia celebrated the Mass, followed by a school cafetorium pot luck as choirs performed a special Mananitas.

Commissioners Hold Special Session Tuesday

Hidalgo County Commissioners met in a special session to discuss several items. Heidi Anderson requested a county representative join the Soap Box Derby Board, Commissioner Croom volunteered. Heads to provide job descriptions. county farm and ranch budget stands at 88000 dollars with 20000 sought for a dump truck and cattle guards funded by rancher and farmer payments from federal land rentals managed by Jim Culberson for the BLM.

Western Bank Funds for George Botzko

The Western Bank of Lordsburg opens the Botzko Fund to public donations with teller receipts and mail-in checks. Mrs Archie Smith reports George Botzko remains in critical condition after severe injuries and pneumonia, with limited movement and a glimmer of hope as doctors scan improvement.
