The Cotton City notes mild spring warmth with optimism that crops may come in early if moisture returns. Alfalfa and fall-planted small grains show growth while farmers prep fields for cotton milo and irrigation. Community updates include school evaluation, a fund drive for church equipment, and a humorous breakfast anecdote.
Lordsburg led by Coaches DeFoor and Armijo returned from Albuquerque with a 3rd place trophy after beating Corona 95-63 to seal the final podium position. Jaime Alvarez earned All-State honors as a freshman while Joaquin led scoring in the 31-point Corona rout.
Ten Lordsburg educators joined the Southwest District NEA-NM spring meeting held Saturday March 11. Principal speaker was Harry Wagaker on Fiscal Resources for the Seventies. Dave Warren was elected vice president elect of the Southwest District. Attendees included R V Traylor Helen Robertson R V Traylor Elementary School Mable Eckert Darrell Hindman Burke Stiles J C Richmond Joby Hansen Violet Noll and David Warren of Dugan Tarango Middle School.

Approximately 18 Lordsburg Hidalgo Chamber of Commerce members and officers met with Tyrone Branch manager R. T. Moolick of Phelps Dodge Corp Thursday morning. The group toured mine properties and was hosted at lunch by the mining company.
A California man was arrested March 7 on the highway west of Lordsburg by City Police Lt. Ed Looker and State Police Officer Ales Guinn after Customs agents alerted them. They found $1100 in genuine money and $200 in merchandise in the car trunk. $11,000 in counterfeit money was recovered on the Columbus highway south of Deming where it had been hidden. Some counterfeit money had reportedly been passed in Lordsburg.
Phelps Dodge announces development of the Metcalf copper mine near Morenci Arizona by 1974 and a new $400 million copper smelter in southern Hidalgo County New Mexico to process Tyrone New Mexico mine output. The plant aims to employ about 300 people with a $4 million annual payroll and will not alter plans for the Douglas Arizona smelter.
Lordsburg High School celebrated a state tournament advancement with pep assemblies and a car caravan to Albuquerque. The town cheered as the Mavs won and returned home, sparking further excitement for the upcoming track season.
Congressman Harold Runnels announces that Area Representative Rudy Valencia from Las Cruces will meet Hidalgo County residents in Lordsburg on Tuesday March 21. Valencia will be in the county commissioners' room at the courthouse from 9 30 a.m. to 12 noon to receive information for Congress man Runnels and answer questions.
In a March 9 1972 decision District Judge Dee C Blythe dismissed Alan A Koffs complaint seeking 300000 for alleged damages to his Lordsburg Airport leasehold. Koff was represented by the Modrall firm of Albuquerque and Lordsburg city by William S Martin Jr of Silver City.
The Chamber of Commerce Merchants Committee presented a holiday list for Board approval. The Board approved New Year’s Day Memorial Day Fourth of July Labor Day Veterans Day Thanksgiving and Christmas Day for adoption by local businesses.
Staff Sergeant Joseph S. Trusan of Dunmore Pennsylvania serves as electrical power technician with the Thailand based 8th Tactical Fighter Wing at Ubon RTAFB. The unit earned the Pacific Air Forces Outstanding Maintenance Award for 1971. Trusan is a 1961 graduate of Dunmore High School and is married to Peggy Haynes of Animas New Mexico.
