In regular session Tuesday March 12 the Hidalgo County Commission heard Fausto Noce Jr. present oral and written comments on the status of repairing or purchasing a new x‑ray machine for the county facility.
Hidalgo County reports a fatal electrocution on March 8 as Jose Alfredo Madred Gutierrez of Chihuahua Mexico died at 11 25 p.m. after contact between irrigation tubing and power lines while rabbit trapping. Next of kin notified and body returned to Mexico. Aftermath covers warrants, a Rainbow Family arrival forecast, and county officials David Lane and Billy Darnell.
Ray Sisneros transfers from the Agriculture Department of Stabilization and Conservation in Datil NM to join Jim Wilborn’s staff at the Lordsburg area office 213 E Second St. Sisneros, a range conservationist, will assist farmers and ranchers with conservation plans and soil and water erosion reduction. The ASCS Office provides office and field tech support, engineering and design work, water development, fencing and grazing systems, soil interpretations, and asset inventories for property analysis.
City officials led by Mayor Stephen Hill and Carl Marino met in Albuquerque on March 12 with state and federal officials to update the modular home project. Key issues including CDBG funding and a bank investor wording misunderstanding were discussed and nearing resolution.
Phelps Dodge Corporation will double Burro Chief solvent extraction electrowinning capacity at Tyrone, boosting output by about 15 thousand tons to exceed 30 thousand tons annually. First phase construction begins in Q2 1985, finishing early 1986, with full rate achieved then. Total expansion cost slated at $9 to $10 million.
The Republican Party of Hidalgo County will hold a convention at the County Courthouse on March 26 starting at 10:00 a.m. Officers and delegates for the state Convention will be elected. All Republicans are urged to attend.
In Lordsburg on Monday night, Hidalgo County Deputy Norman Lynch shot and killed a white male, Calvin Boone, 51, of Texas, who lunged with a knife during a routine check at the Freeway Chevron. The DA called the shooting justified, and Lynch is on administrative leave with pay during an in-house inquiry.
The Lordsburg School Board swore in newly elected members Gilbert Mora Fritz Placencia and Bob Lowery, presented election certificates, and opened sealed audit proposals for fiscal year 1984 85 with Stone McGee Co receiving the top rating. The board opposed annexation of two miles from Animas to Lordsburg and filled a vacancy, electing Mora as Vice President.
The City Council schedules a special meeting on Monday March 18 at City Hall at 6:00 p.m. Citizens may comment on the CDBG program or submit written remarks to be sent to the HUD in Fort Worth Texas. A separate note says Hidalgo County Manager's Office has awarded Havens Construction the hospital renovation contract with work to start by end of March and finish within 90 days aiming for July 1 1985.
Hidalgo County and Los Organos remind residents that bare root saplings from the tree beautification program will be available Saturday March 16 at 8 a.m. in front of the Hidalgo County Courthouse. Arizona Ash Non-Bearing Mulberry and a few Mimosa are offered at 6.27 each. Holes should be dug in advance. unsold trees revert to the county for public domain use.
A new district office for Governor Anaya opens in Las Cruces at 575 S Alameda, Room 135. Director Mary Inez Garcia oversees operations with contact number 524-6295 to handle inquiries and assist area residents weekdays.
