Raymond T. Smith 59 died at home March 15 1985 in Lordsburg where he lived his life. He was born December 16 1925 in Deming to Arthur and Blanche Smith and worked for the State Highway Department. Survived by wife Lee A. Smith daughter Jo Ann Fallis stepdaughter Louise Stevens five brothers five grandchildren and one great grandchild. Funeral held March 18 at 2:00 p.m. in Heather Chapel with Rev Emil Herzog and W L Sanders officiating. County To Have New Prosecutor In Lordsburg
District Attorney David A Lane announced Governor Toney Anaya signed into law a new district attorney budget creating a full time prosecutor for Lordsburg. The assistant will reside there and handle probation matters while Lane visits Fridays. The law takes effect July 1 1985 and Lane will name a replacement after inquiries.

City Council supports crosswalk safety lights plan
In a special Monday meeting the Lordsburg School Board urged flashing lights at Third and Main and Ninth and Main to protect students walking to Central and Southside Elementaries. The State Highway Department counts did not merit lights. council backs the measure and may share costs if no action by year’s end, with the city handling electrical costs.

Windsail And Three Wheel Races Set For April
The Lordsburg Optimist and City of Lordsburg sponsor the 4th Windsail Race and 2nd Three Wheeler Race on April 13 and 14. Windsail speeds reach 45 to 50 MPH with two brakes plus a mast brake and a front or rear hand brake. Standards require sails at least four by six feet. sails are inspected before racing. If a windsail tips over, the driver may continue if they can reset.

District Attorney clarifies Lordsburg shooting incident
District Attorney David Lane from Lordsburg admits an earlier report on Calvin W. Boone’s shooting death at the Freeway Chevron was incorrect. Lane says his initial release was based on verbal briefings and not written reports, and he acknowledges Boone was in his vehicle and the briefing failed to convey details clearly. The incident involved Hidalgo County Deputy Norman Lynch in a late night check at 1150 E. Motel Drive. Boone, a La Mesa Texas resident, became abusive and uncooperative, ultimately leading to the encounter.

New Board Members Receive Oath Of Office
The Animal School Board held a March 14 meeting. Richard Clifton administered the oath to Ruben Maestas and Carolyn Schwickerath. Donnie Burton was elected President, Maestas Vice President, and June Payne Secretary. The board approved minutes warrants and agenda and voted to keep the current auditor.
