Hidalgo Democrats Set Meetings For Delegates to Convention

Democrats meet in Hidalgo County at 7 30 p m on Thursday March 13 in the County Commissioners chambers to elect nine delegates for the Hidalgo County Democratic Convention next week The county convention is set for Thursday March 20 at 7 30 p m in the County Commission chambers to select delegates for the New Mexico Democratic Pre Primary Convention at the Pan American Center in Las Cruces on Saturday March 29.

Judge Grants Injunction Against Mayor Over Recreation Center

Sixth District Judge Ray Hughes halts construction of Lordsburg Recreation Center for 15 days to give the newly elected city council time to study the project. The injunction follows a petition by Lordsburg’s five new councilors and notes transportation and safety concerns with the South Main Street site. Union Vote Planned At Playas Smelter

A three day election for Phelps Dodge Playas smelter workers will be held April 22 23 and 24 to decide on union representation. Smelter Superintendent Ray L Winslow announced the dates after a National Labor Relations Board hearing attended by Steelworkers Teamsters and Operating Engineers representatives. The company will hold information meetings to inform employees about items to consider. Voting unit groups include production maintenance warehouse railroad and day pay employees in technical services.

High School Students Enter Statewide Competition

Interstate 10 resurfacing planned near Lordsburg New Mexico

The New Mexico Highway Department will resurface seven miles of I-10 west of Lordsburg Hidalgo County this year after receiving FHWA environmental clearance. The project covers all four lanes 6 to 13 miles east of the Arizona border with a $4 million estimated cost. No new rights of way or utility relocations are needed. An archaeologist surveyed two pits and no cultural finds were noted. Environment unit study found no environmental issues. FHWA approved proceeding without further studies or hearings.
