The Lordsburg Mavericks opened state tournament action with a 73-61 win over Clayton to reach the semifinals on Wednesday. They then fell 69-67 to Escalante on Thursday morning, ending their bid for the championship.
The State Corporation Commission held a public hearing at the Hidalgo County Courthouse on Tuesday to consider Shady Grove Truck Stop’s request for a Certificate of Public Convenience to operate a Class D wrecker in Hidalgo and Luna Counties. Sheriff Gene Moore, Highway Maintenance Supervisor Gerald McNutt, and Shady Grove official John Graham testified on need, traffic, and 24 hour service. the commissioner indicated the certificate should be granted.
Ellinwood, Grant County district attorney, announces John E. Eaton will join as assistant district attorney. Eaton, currently in Tucumcari New Mexico, plans to start in early April and will reside in the Silver City area. He holds a 1975 law degree and has practiced as defense lawyer and prosecutor in multiple jurisdictions. Ellinwood notes another sixth district assistant DA will be appointed by July 1, with an announcement expected in early summer.
Fausto Noce Jr the newly elected Municipal Judge has moved into the new City Court office at City Hall. Inquiries about the Court can be answered by the Judge or the Court's clerk Lupe Rivera the telephone number is 5423421. Judge Noce says the doors are always open to anyone that would like to talk to him.
Hidalgo Republicans held their County Convention Saturday to elect delegates for the State Convention in Albuquerque on March 27. Thirty eight Republicans attended as delegates were chosen including Randy Merrell Clyde Richens and Norma Jean Richens with Kim Massey named as alternate.
Democrats met Tuesday at the County Courthouse to choose delegates for the State Convention in Albuquerque March 20 and 21. Delegates named were Mauro Rico Fausto Noce Jr Raymundo Saucedo Bill Collins Ellie Collins Joe Morales Eddie Diaz Louis Howard. Alternates were Jackie Howard Carol Kipp Cav elina Hood Rex Kipp. A motion urged uncommitted delegates. Enchilada dinner planned March 12 at Rice Restaurant from 12 to 5 p.m. for $3 per plate to raise trip funds.

Water forecasts show the Gila at 74 percent of average at Solomon 78 percent at Virden and 85 percent at Gila while the San Francisco River is near 78 percent of average. February precipitation exceeded normal and the March 1 snow pack stands at 103 percent of average.
Ralph Ellinwood announced Manuel D. V. Saucedo, longtime Assistant District Attorney, named Chief Assistant Attorney for Grant Luna and Hidalgo counties. Saucedo, a Lordsburg native and UNM graduate, previously earned a business degree in 1957 and a JD in 1977. He and wife Lois live in Lordsburg with son Christopher and daughter Sarah and he has served on the Lordsburg School Board.
