The Observation notes a recent surge in tire slashing and car damage after a quiet period, urging parental responsibility and questioning local youth involvement. It names a string of incidents around Sixth Street, West 4th Street, and nearby halls, while correcting Mayor’s figures and reporting on city staff.
Tuesday afternoon about 4 p m a car driven by Mrs Joan Reagan ran over the curb and into the front yard of Ole Richmond striking his station wagon causing damage. The Reagan car continued and struck a building on Ice Plant property. Mrs Reagan said she blacked out while traveling east on Railroad Ave and the car went out of control. She and her son were taken to a local physician for first aid.
The Chamber of Commerce banquet is set for 7:30 p m at the American Legion hall with Marion Beil of Ramagordo as guest speaker. General chairman N M Morrigen leads, with Carl Lehman Ena Mitchell and a ticket committee including Williams Reay McGhee Dettman Speer Heather and Kimbley. Mrs George Del Fus and Mrs Claude Speer head the decorating committee and the Auxiliary will serve.
Drew Cloud of the American Legion will be the banquet speaker at the Spring Conference of the ith District in Lordsburg on April 30 and May 1. District Commander David Strain announced. The event includes delegate registration, Legion and Auxiliary joint meetings, a banquet and dance, and a Sunday memorial service with business sessions. Robert Swan Post No. 30 and Auxiliary host the conference.
N M Morrison announces the Lions Club will host Zogi Revue at the Lordsburg High School Auditorium on March 31. The show stars Prince Zogi with Stars of Today comedy, music and illusions. C A Frank arranged the appearance as the production returns to one night stands only since 1955.
Hidalgo County residents bought 19815.09 in U S Saving Bonds in January, 19.81 percent of its 100000 annual goal. New Mexicans invested 1243253.08 in Series E and H bonds, 5.66 percent below January 1959, with the state reaching 8.40 percent of its 14.8 million annual goal. Nationwide January purchases totaled 420.588 million with H bond exchanges and tax deferral noted. E to H exchanges are excluded. Holders of Series E earned 121.314 million in interest for January.
PTA president Patsy Richins reports a successful dinner that netted $301.00 for the association. Chair Burke Stiles and Dick Traylor thank participants and supporters. The regular PTA meeting is scheduled for Monday at 7:30 p.m. with a planned program and officer elections.
L. B. Robinson and Russell Smith of this city were elected directors of the Greenlee Development Corporation which owns and operates the Greenlee Country Club at Clifton at a meeting Monday night in Morenci Town Hall. Smith and Robinson are the only Lordsburg residents who are stockholders. many locals are country club members, including Dewey Jones, Leo Cohen, Peter M. Chase, Ben Cochran, John Robertson, Dudley Robertson, J. R. Poindexter, Sr., and Rex Kipp, Sr.
The Lordsburg Senior High Band of sixty under Roger Brandt presents a concert on Saturday March 12 at 8 00 p m in Central School Gym. Soloist Jeaneane Badgett will sing Carmena. The brass sextette performs Joy to the World and the clarinet plays American Sketch. Tickets at the door Adults 50c Students 25.
Sam Gass, chairman, reported final Heart Fund drive results for Hidalgo County. Sums include Beta Sigma Phi $65.29, Animus Valley $34.03, industrial $25.00, Memorial $1009, and business houses $202.48, totaling $336.80 with thanks to volunteers and donors.
County Agent Ed M Hitson of the Cooperative Extension Service at New Mexico State University urges rabies vaccination for all dogs. He notes dogs are most exposed to wildlife carriers and most likely to pass the disease to humans. New vaccines from chick embryos should protect dogs for at least three years. vaccination is recommended for dogs over four months old.
Pete Torres and Don Martinez will be at Hotel Hidalgo Lordsburg on Tuesday March 15 from 9 30 a m to 3 p m in the hotel lounge to assist veterans and dependents with service matters.
City officials approved the ballot form for the April 5 city election and authorized the publication of the Election Proclamation. Debate over ballot numbering drew input from City Attorney Anderson and Assistant Attorney General Baggett. Poll sites are Central School and City Hall auditorium with 8 am to 7 pm voting. four alderman candidates may face ward opponents per Section 14-15-2. The council protested a requested gas rate increase from El Paso Natural Gas Co. and listed attending officials.
The Hidalgo County Red Cross will sponsor a benefit dance at the La Fiesta Club on Saturday evening March 19. Clarence Blair chairs the event with President Joyce Hazelton. music by Deming Hillbillies. Minors admitted with parents or guardians. no fund drive if the dance succeeds.
Hidalgo County Teachers Association will meet Friday March 18 at Lordsburg High School. The meeting is set for 7 30 p m and the President urges all teachers to be present.
