National 1-H Club Week Highlighted Across Nation

National 4-H Week runs March 5 to 12 with 9 254 000 youths participating nationwide. Hidalgo County 4-H leaders plan a county survey to determine residents with past 4-H involvement. Local contacts include Mrs H H Wood Mrs Ernest Rothpletz Mrs Ernest Browning and Mrs E L Payne. The theme Learn Live Serve Through 4 H aims to reflect on accomplishments set new goals attract more participation and recruit volunteers. Hidalgo youths completed 134 projects in 1959.

Hidalgo County 4 Hers Earn Special Recognition

Hidalgo County five 4 H members are praised by Eva M Thomas NMSA Extension Service for accomplishments during National 4 H Week March 5 12 They own and care for 24 livestock head and 100 poultry birds preserved 221 quarts of produce prepared 201 dishes served 45 meals completed 43 garments and 45 sewing items and contributed to community health programs with 12 members leading health projects and three older members training as leaders.

Health Department: influenza causes nineteen deaths this year

Health officials report nineteen influenza fatalities since January across San Miguel Chaves West Union Bernalillo Grant Ric a Sierra and Santa Fe counties. Most victims are elderly, with eleven aged 75 or older and three in their seventies. State director Stanley J. Leland warns the elderly and at risk groups remain vulnerable.

Two Tickets Filed for April City Election

City politics heated as the April 5 election nears with incumbent Mayor Alan A. Koff leading the Greater Lordsburg slate. The Citizens' Ticket lists Eugene Montague for mayor and Allen Hill Harold Bishop Saucedo and Tibbs for aldermen, with independent candidates C L Brown and C L Wright for Police Judge.

Marion Bell to Speak at Alamogordo Chamber Banquet

Marion Bell, Alamogordo Chamber of Commerce manager, will be guest speaker at the Chamber banquet March 11 at 7 30 p m. The local junior high ensemble and senior high brass sextet provide music. Tickets must be bought by March 7 at 5 00 p m with no door sales.

Services Held For Mrs. Eaves Monday

Funeral services for Mrs. Rosa Ella Eaves were held Feb. 29 at Heather Chapel with Vernon Hawkins of the Church of Christ officiating. Born Dec. 3, 1680 in McDade Texas, she died Feb. 25 at home. Survived by son Archie and two grandsons William and Robert of Lordsburg, with two additional grandchildren noted. Pallbearers included Joe and Lewis Bivens Frank Bowman Bill Ramage Stan Walton and Marvin Parnell. Burial followed in Mountain View Cemetery.

Vehicle office extends renewal deadline to March 9 instead of March 1 and will be closed on Saturday.

Lordsburg Town Team Wins Two in Silver City Doubleheader

Lordsburg traveled to Silver City on Sunday Feb 28 for a league-closing doubleheader. In game one against Hurley Lordsburg edged 71 69 after a late hook shot by Pete Hatch. Blair led Lordsburg with 17 points while Hurley’s E Huerta scored 17 and Pino 16. In game two Lordsburg topped El Paso Feed Store 74 72 as Steve Rivera poured in 29 and Hatch 15. Diaz added a timely layup sealing the win.

Twenty File For Thirteen Hidalgo County Offices

Twenty candidates filed for Hidalgo County offices on the March 1 filing date. Leading contenders include Sen Rufus H Warnell and Frank Bowman for State Senate and Jack Morgan seeking a Democratic nomination for State Representative. Several incumbents drew no opposition in primaries with others facing Republican challengers in the general election. The primaries occur May 10.

Teens Face Federal Charge in Auto Theft Case

Four teenage youths were arrested by City Police after being linked to stolen vehicles from Pampa Texas and Deming New Mexico. The group admitted stealing both cars and were turned over to the FBI for U.S. Commissioner action under the Dye Act.

Appeal for Census Takers Opens as April 1 Start

Arthur R. Slater district supervisor of Population and Housing urged area residents to apply for census taker jobs. Candidates must be 18 or older U S citizens with high school education or equivalent. Training and pay details include a $20 fee after successful completion and an expected about $12 per day. prior law enforcement or tax agency ties disqualify applicants.

Alan A. Koff, Democratic County Chairman, states the Democratic Central Committee of Hidalgo County has not authorized anyone to collect funds for any purpose. The notice warns residents against unapproved solicitation for the Democratic Party.

Desert Sun Garden Club Exhibit Sponsored by Local Merchants

The Desert Sun Garden Club and Lordsburg merchants present a two day exhibit March 25 and 26 at the Chase building by the Post Office. The display covers spring gardening from ground prep tools to finished garden products with seeds bulbs catalogs books and plant care implements. Members will be on hand to assist and explain flower arrangements and cutting garden art.
