Lordsburg Seventh Grade Team Wins Deming Tourney

Lordsburg captured the Seventh Grade division of the Deming Junior High Invitational by beating Silver City 21 to 15 in the final after a 26 to 21 semifinal victory over Deming. Jerry Valdez topped the scoring with 14 in the final. Bobby Fagardo added seven in the final and accepted the championship trophy.

FR Leaders To Testify in Bracero Program Hearing

A NM trio representing the New Mexico Farm Bureau left for Washington March 1 to testify before House committees on extending Public Law 78 Bracero farm labor programs. Attending are A W Langger Hagerman vice president Adair Merrell Animas chairman R H Hancock Dona Ana County executive secretary. The hearing runs March 6 to 11 with a NM Farm Bureau meeting March 2 and support from state president W B McAlister who cites the program as beneficial to farmers and Mexico, while addressing labor supply and illegal entry concerns.

City Street Paving Survey Underway by Local Engineers

William Matotan and John Andrews of William Matotan & Associates begin a survey for preliminary plans and cost estimates to repair and pave many city streets. The project covers north and south side blocks, hospital district rail routes, and will be stone and oil paved with no cost to property owners.

V.F.W. Plans Cemetery Memorials at Two Sites

The VFW and Ladies Auxiliary plan flag pole memorials at Mountain View Cemetery and Shakespeare Cemetery by Memorial Day. Eugene Noce says the brick base will be ten feet square and three feet high, filled with crushed rock, painted green, with no maintenance. The VFW initials will appear on the front. Site locations are inside the gate at Mountain View and inside the east entrance at Shakespeare.

Suspended sentences handed out by judge in Lordsburg

Judge Paul Tackett of the Sixth Judicial District Court in Lordsburg imposed four suspended sentences. Defendants include Jack Wilson 19 and Weldon Flynn McWilliams 20 with terms of one to three years for breaking and entering, George Putman 34 with one to five years for unlawful taking of a vehicle, and Archie Helms 19 with one month to five years for larceny from a building.

Juveniles Placed On Probation in Lordsburg Court

Charles Williams president of the Lordsburg Golf Club reports Jim Aldritch of Brown Construction Co graded five fairways last Saturday and four more will be done soon.
