Three students led the six week honors at Burg High School with all A grades. Seniors Sally Baker and Mary Edith Hart top the list with four and five As respectively, while freshman James Whe has four As. Several other juniors and freshmen also appear on the honor roll with multiple A grades.
Lordsburg captured the Seventh Grade division of the Deming Junior High Invitational by beating Silver City 21 to 15 in the final after a 26 to 21 semifinal victory over Deming. Jerry Valdez topped the scoring with 14 in the final. Bobby Fagardo added seven in the final and accepted the championship trophy.
A NM trio representing the New Mexico Farm Bureau left for Washington March 1 to testify before House committees on extending Public Law 78 Bracero farm labor programs. Attending are A W Langger Hagerman vice president Adair Merrell Animas chairman R H Hancock Dona Ana County executive secretary. The hearing runs March 6 to 11 with a NM Farm Bureau meeting March 2 and support from state president W B McAlister who cites the program as beneficial to farmers and Mexico, while addressing labor supply and illegal entry concerns.
Betty Schulz of Stylerite Beauty Salon modeled Charlotte Robertson at the Pecos Valley Hair Fashion and Contest in Alamogordo on March 5-6. Guest artist for the fashion show was Mrs. Jesse Lee Sharpley of Lubbock Texas.
William Matotan and John Andrews of William Matotan & Associates begin a survey for preliminary plans and cost estimates to repair and pave many city streets. The project covers north and south side blocks, hospital district rail routes, and will be stone and oil paved with no cost to property owners.
The VFW and Ladies Auxiliary plan flag pole memorials at Mountain View Cemetery and Shakespeare Cemetery by Memorial Day. Eugene Noce says the brick base will be ten feet square and three feet high, filled with crushed rock, painted green, with no maintenance. The VFW initials will appear on the front. Site locations are inside the gate at Mountain View and inside the east entrance at Shakespeare.
Ralph Smith who underwent surgery two weeks ago at Ft Bayard is improving and doing as well as can be expected.
Community Public Service Company earned first place in its division for public utilities in the National Safety Council contest for 1960. Their frequency rate of 2.32, far below the group average, reflects ongoing safety education and merit awards.
Judge Paul Tackett of the Sixth Judicial District Court in Lordsburg imposed four suspended sentences. Defendants include Jack Wilson 19 and Weldon Flynn McWilliams 20 with terms of one to three years for breaking and entering, George Putman 34 with one to five years for unlawful taking of a vehicle, and Archie Helms 19 with one month to five years for larceny from a building.
State Engineers officials and Red Rock farmers discuss reducing Upper Gila irrigation allotment to 1.93 acre feet. Land under cultivation before 1957 barred from new land, with crops consuming varying acre feet. Farmers warn action worsens national surplus and harms Silver City and Lordsburg communities.
Judge Paul Tackett presided over a Lordsburg Juvenile Court session where teenagers implicated in an underage drinking party were placed on probation or dismissed. The investigation involved city police and sheriff's deputies with Bartley McDonald of Silver City aiding inquiries and ordering regular probation reports.
Charles Williams president of the Lordsburg Golf Club reports Jim Aldritch of Brown Construction Co graded five fairways last Saturday and four more will be done soon. The club and community thank them for improving the course and invite all golf lovers to come play. Special thanks go to Ed Jackson for his efforts.
