Residents report ongoing damage to street lamps since December 1955 as vandalism increases. Community Public Company replaced many lamps but hundreds remain broken or dark, with crews struggling to fix and protect lights. Citizens urged to report culprits to Public Service Co. and local authorities.
In a ceremony at the New Mexico Boys Ranch in Portales the state officers of the International Order of Odd Fellows and the Rebekah Assembly presented a Ford diesel tractor. Attendees included McCracken of Roswell, Ariel Victor, Mrs Mabel McFicken, Lem A. Wright, and Norman Piecer. The gift supports the ranch operation and is noted in the Mexico based event coverage.
Lordsburg marks Girl Scout Week March 12 to 18 with troop exhibits of handiwork and badges displayed in downstore windows. Juliette Law Chairman Mrs. B Woody will collect donations for the National Fund for International Friendship. All Girl Scouts and Brownies to attend their church next Sunday March 18 in uniform.
The history of Girl Scouting in Lordsburg traces a lineage from Campfire Girls led by Mrs. A L Green and Miss Vera Johnson to successive troops under Mrs. Green and later Mrs. Ralph Clark and Mrs. Dudley Robertson. Early camps were improvised with help from Forest Rangers and soldiers at the local Airbase.
The Lordsburg Volunteer Fire Department asks residents to avoid calling the operator for fire location until minutes after alarms. Do not chase fire trucks and keep distance to allow rapid response. If you must approach, park at least one car length away to avoid blocking hoses and access.
Miss Cora Glaze wins an all expense paid trip to Chicago for selling Compton's Encyclopedia. She leaves Wednesday for Dallas to fly via Pan-American Airlines to Chicago for a three day stay attending the Compton's Convention. She will stay at the Palmer House as a guest of the company and return Sunday night or Monday morning.
A baseball meeting will be held in the Central Bar on Friday march 9 at 7 30 p m All interested are invited and urged to attend.
Until further notice there will be no Out Patient Clinic at Carrie Tingley Hospital in Hot Springs. This changes access for patients seeking outpatient care and may require referrals to alternative facilities.
A man using the alias Davis Lee Adams but identified as J M Greer forged checks for 62 and 103 dollars using Howard Lunt's name. He cashed one check at a grocery store, fled town, was captured in Wilcox, Arizona, and returned to Lordsburg. Pleaded guilty before Justice Brown and bound over to District Court on $1000 bond. He has a long prior record for passing bad checks in California Wisconsin and Santa Fe New Mexico. He is jailed for inability to post bond.
Meacham M. Muse of Tucson was killed instantly Monday morning when he was run over by a freight train in the Lordsburg yard. Investigators reported he attempted to board the moving train and was thrown under the car, with both legs amputated. Muse was the conductor on the ill fated trip from Lordsburg to Tucson and survived by his wife and two sons. Heather Mortuary arranged the burial and body was sent to Tucson.
A. beautiful and unusual gift reached Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Noling Sunday afternoon. Red heart shaped anthuriums flown from Hawaii were sent by Mr. and Mrs. James Aghayahii of Hawaii. The donor was a longtime friend of the Nolings' son Robert who was injured in service and treated at Fort Bliss Hospital.
The filing deadline has passed with numerous candidates for state and local offices. Notables include State Senator Ernest Short and John Disher as Republicans, Jack Morgan for State Representative, and others for County Clerk, Treasurer, Assessor, Sheriff, and Commissioners. City races feature a Business Men’s Ticket with Mayor B M Kimbley and four aldermen contenders.
The Lordsburg mayoral race concludes with Alan A. Koff and council contenders Harvey Hatch Ward 2 4 year term Albert Hill Fausto Noce Arthur Altuna set to take office.
The Safety Council schedules a public meeting next Tuesday night March 13 at City Hall. Citizens are invited and urged to attend the session to discuss local safety issues.
