Longtime Animas Rancher Dies In California Funeral Held

G R William Avams a rancher from Animas died in California after a lengthy illness. He was married to Bessie Lee and began ranching in 1912 at a homestead ten miles from Animas. Survived by his wife and numerous relatives in California Lordsburg and Animas, the funeral was officiated by Franklin R. Poage with Herbert Young and others as pallbearers. Services were held at Mortuary with burial in Mountain Cemetery.

All Day Meeting at Baptist Church Discusses Sunday School Expansion

An all day gathering in the Baptist Church of the Southwestern Association of Free Churches featured speakers from the state office in Albuquerque and Harry P. Stagg. A representative from the Southern Baptist Convention, Mr. Harrell of Nashville, Tennessee, spoke on enlarging Sunday School rooms. A meal was served at the church.

Clyde R. Martin Dies in Silver City

Clyde R. Martin died in Silver City after a period of ill health. Born July 17, 1892 in Alleghany County Pennsylvania, he moved west about ten years ago and led mining operations with Clive Walker at Indian Metals Company in Lordsburg. He married Mareta Henderson in 1941 after his first wife’s 1938 death. He leaves a brother Wilson R. Martin in Crafton, Pennsylvania. Funeral services were held at the Lordsburg Methodist Church with Rev. F. R. Poage officiating. pallbearers included Clive Walker and others. Burial will take place in Crafton, Pennsylvania.

Death of Mrs Emma Turner in Texas

Mrs Alton Powell received a telegram about the death of her grandmother Mrs Emma Turner in Marfa Texas. Powell left for El Paso Wednesday afternoon and the funeral will be held Sunday with burial in Junction. Mrs Turner is mother of Mrs Earle Kerr.

The District OPA office starts mailing application forms for next gas allotments for truck operators excluding fleets. H L Galles announces forms for fleet operators will be mailed by boards. Truck operators should mail forms promptly, fleet operators must bring forms in person. Boards plan mailing coupons by March 15 and aim to finish by April 1.

Former Lordsburg Resident Visits On Leave

2nd Lt. Jessie T. Smith Jr and Mrs Smith called on old friends in Lordsburg Sunday. Smith, a Bombadier who served in Western Europe, is en route to Midland Texas where he will be reassigned. He is the son of Mr and Mrs Jessie T. Smith Sr former Lordsburg residents.

Butte Service Station Operator Suspended For Coupon Abuse

Clais Teston of the Butte Service Station Hot Springs will be suspended 15 days for accepting A-14 gasoline coupons before validity. Ten days are stayed if he abides by regulations. Hearing by Floyd F. Miles in Denver announced the action. Additional suspensions were ordered for five station proprietors and one garage operator after Gallup hearings.

A letter from A J Bridger of Los Angeles informed Mr and Mrs N A Gammon of the death of Mrs KR Drakenfeld on February 26. She was buried March 1 in Calvary cemetery at age 91. Mrs Drakenfeld had lived in Valedon with her daughter Mrs Balmforth. Both Balmforth and Mrs Balmforth had died earlier.

Staff Sgt. Lawrence Klement of Deming returned home Saturday night after being a GermanPOW from July to January and arriving on the Gripsholm last month. He is stationed at Beaumont Hospital El Paso and plans about a 30 day home leave before another operation on a shattered leg healing well. Duncan man undergoes operation at St Marys Tucson

A. C. Perry of Duncan was operated on Monday at St. Mary's Hospital in Tucson and is recovering well. His daughter Maude McDonald and son Charles Perry have been with him. Mrs. Perry died in Tucson last month during a previous hospital stay. Alma Carson is noted as a Perry daughter.

Interesting Visitor from Camp Capt. Ferguson Brings Civil War Letter

The Chamber of Commerce hosts a visitor, the wife of a Army officer, Capt. Wirt Henry Ferguson of Virginia. She brings a letter from the late Robert E. Lee to Major Ferguson. While in England aiding the Southern Army, Major Ferguson bought a fine uniform and two army blankets for General Lee. The couple, related to revolutionary Patrie Henry, ran a blockade to meet the Major in England. She later wrote about the trip for Lippincotts Magazine and Ferguson owns a copy.

Judge Marsalis Funeral Marks Long Serving Justice

The funeral for Cornelius Whitman Marsalis, born January 16, 1904, Shreveport, Louisiana, who died March 1, 1945, drew neighbors and lodge members. Rev. Sidney Hale delivered a comforting sermon, with musical offerings by local church members. he served as Justice of the Peace for Lordsburg and Municipal Judge, holding a sixteenth term. He is survived by his sister Ella Atkins, daughter Jennie Lewis Gases, son Nealy Marsalis, and two grandchildren.
