George S Benson argues the 1940 war profits tax hampers small business while favoring giant corporations. He warns the prewar profit share and wartime levy could stifle peacetime innovation, urging repeal after the war to unleash small firms and job growth.
G R William Avams a rancher from Animas died in California after a lengthy illness. He was married to Bessie Lee and began ranching in 1912 at a homestead ten miles from Animas. Survived by his wife and numerous relatives in California Lordsburg and Animas, the funeral was officiated by Franklin R. Poage with Herbert Young and others as pallbearers. Services were held at Mortuary with burial in Mountain Cemetery.
The Neely Marsalis and Gass families express sincere thanks to those who sent messages flowers and helped during Sr. C. W. Marsalis illness and after his passing.
An all day gathering in the Baptist Church of the Southwestern Association of Free Churches featured speakers from the state office in Albuquerque and Harry P. Stagg. A representative from the Southern Baptist Convention, Mr. Harrell of Nashville, Tennessee, spoke on enlarging Sunday School rooms. A meal was served at the church.
The American Legion Auxiliary 11 sponsors a food sale on March 31 at the Community Pub Service office. Sale opens at 9 a.m. Proceeds support Legion activities.
Clyde R. Martin died in Silver City after a period of ill health. Born July 17, 1892 in Alleghany County Pennsylvania, he moved west about ten years ago and led mining operations with Clive Walker at Indian Metals Company in Lordsburg. He married Mareta Henderson in 1941 after his first wife’s 1938 death. He leaves a brother Wilson R. Martin in Crafton, Pennsylvania. Funeral services were held at the Lordsburg Methodist Church with Rev. F. R. Poage officiating. pallbearers included Clive Walker and others. Burial will take place in Crafton, Pennsylvania.
Mrs Alton Powell received a telegram about the death of her grandmother Mrs Emma Turner in Marfa Texas. Powell left for El Paso Wednesday afternoon and the funeral will be held Sunday with burial in Junction. Mrs Turner is mother of Mrs Earle Kerr.
A New Mexico committee of tire dealers and inspectors will meet in Albuquerque next week to plan a Tire Week observance with fixed dates. Members include H. E. Leonard Jimmy Austin Russell Robertson E. H. Sudrow J. H. Miller O C. Hicey Ray Hogan and R B. Barger.
The District OPA office starts mailing application forms for next gas allotments for truck operators excluding fleets. H L Galles announces forms for fleet operators will be mailed by boards. Truck operators should mail forms promptly, fleet operators must bring forms in person. Boards plan mailing coupons by March 15 and aim to finish by April 1.
OPA rationing officials announce March quotas with New Mexico up from 6635 to 7028. Passenger car tire quotas rise slightly in three states and fall in three others while truck and tractor implement tire quotas remain largely unchanged.
Federal Court in Santa Fe hosts three injunction suits against A A Riley doing business as Cement Block Manufacturing Company Joe Atkinson of Vibro Tile Company and Rafael G Anayo and Frank Griego of Rio Grande Cement Products Company. Suit charges failure to obtain an OPA pricing chart before manufacturing and selling cement building material.

Times include Sunday School 9:45 to 10:00 and worship at 11:00 7:30 p m midweek 7:20 p m for youth prayer. Masses at Prisoner of War Camp 8:00 a m and 1:00 p m with English sermon at 10:00 a m. various catechism and choir practices noted.
Scouts of Troop 121 held their weekly session forming patrols and electing officers. Albert Smith named Senior Patrol Leader with Oscar Turrentine as Troop Scribe. Rattlesnake Patrol elected Bobby Joe Callaway as Patrol Leader and J L as assistant. Panther Patrol elected Jonnie Smith with Holly Welker as assistant. Joe Payne led troop activities as assistant Scoutmaster with Mr Fallis visiting as Scout Field Executive.
2nd Lt. Jessie T. Smith Jr and Mrs Smith called on old friends in Lordsburg Sunday. Smith, a Bombadier who served in Western Europe, is en route to Midland Texas where he will be reassigned. He is the son of Mr and Mrs Jessie T. Smith Sr former Lordsburg residents.
Clais Teston of the Butte Service Station Hot Springs will be suspended 15 days for accepting A-14 gasoline coupons before validity. Ten days are stayed if he abides by regulations. Hearing by Floyd F. Miles in Denver announced the action. Additional suspensions were ordered for five station proprietors and one garage operator after Gallup hearings.

Mrs Elizabeth Foster widow of J B Foster died at 6 25 pm Wednesday at her home after a period of illness. Neighbors forced the back door when she did not answer the doorbell and she died minutes after friends arrived. Funeral arrangements await instructions from her sister.
A letter from A J Bridger of Los Angeles informed Mr and Mrs N A Gammon of the death of Mrs KR Drakenfeld on February 26. She was buried March 1 in Calvary cemetery at age 91. Mrs Drakenfeld had lived in Valedon with her daughter Mrs Balmforth. Both Balmforth and Mrs Balmforth had died earlier.

Staff Sgt. Lawrence Klement of Deming returned home Saturday night after being a GermanPOW from July to January and arriving on the Gripsholm last month. He is stationed at Beaumont Hospital El Paso and plans about a 30 day home leave before another operation on a shattered leg healing well. He will visit his sister Judy Klement in Lordsburg in about a week.
A. C. Perry of Duncan was operated on Monday at St. Mary's Hospital in Tucson and is recovering well. His daughter Maude McDonald and son Charles Perry have been with him. Mrs. Perry died in Tucson last month during a previous hospital stay. Alma Carson is noted as a Perry daughter.

Howard Phillips, 8S. 3-c, U.S. Navy, stationed at Olathe Kansas, is home on leave for a week. He will return with his wife and son.
At the regular City Council meeting on Monday night William Downey was appointed to replace the late Judge C. W. Marsalis as Municipal Court Judge. His current office will be in the Sanders and Taggart law office.
Mrs Mary Fuller writes to Captain Lenard C Fuller’s parents in Peoria about his Bronze Star Medal for meritorious service in France from August 1944 to January 1946. She notes a Presidential Citation earning the company a wreath, mentions a prior citation, and describes a ribbon she found with a crimson field and a dark blue center with white edges.
The Chamber of Commerce hosts a visitor, the wife of a Army officer, Capt. Wirt Henry Ferguson of Virginia. She brings a letter from the late Robert E. Lee to Major Ferguson. While in England aiding the Southern Army, Major Ferguson bought a fine uniform and two army blankets for General Lee. The couple, related to revolutionary Patrie Henry, ran a blockade to meet the Major in England. She later wrote about the trip for Lippincotts Magazine and Ferguson owns a copy.
Mrs Eva Westover Jones, a Lordsburg High School alumna now in Phoenix and secretary to Arizona’s assistant superintendent of public instruction, attended the funeral of her brother Jordan Edward Westover who died last week. Her husband Elmer A. Jones, a Navy Seabee, serves on the Marshall Islands. Eva plans a short stay to visit her mother Mrs William Prine.
Mrs Clyde R Martla thanks friends and neighbors for sympathy and aid during her time of sorrow and acknowledges flow ers and other acts of kindness.
The funeral for Cornelius Whitman Marsalis, born January 16, 1904, Shreveport, Louisiana, who died March 1, 1945, drew neighbors and lodge members. Rev. Sidney Hale delivered a comforting sermon, with musical offerings by local church members. he served as Justice of the Peace for Lordsburg and Municipal Judge, holding a sixteenth term. He is survived by his sister Ella Atkins, daughter Jennie Lewis Gases, son Nealy Marsalis, and two grandchildren.
Mrs May Hanner and Mrs C E K Martin visiting Hurley this week with the Wm Helbig family. They traveled from El Paso to Hurley on Sunday and plan to stay until William Helbig Jr on furlough ends. Marines service represented.
The Lordsburg Hidalgo Library met on March 6 with president Mrs. C. C. Fuller and members Mrs. Clara Brown, Mrs. Mathilde Johnson, Mrs. Pearl Gauthier, and Mrs. Edith White present. CAP members gathered at the airport on Monday for an hour of military drill and courtesy under A Bene son with Tommy Clayton resisting. The session focused on Civil Air regulations with Marshal Kuykendall teaching in the absence of Ronald Jensen.
Mrs L B Robinson thanks Army Wives for help in Red Cross production and especially the Prisoner of War Camp officers for kindly donating articles to replace those stolen. Fifteen ladies aided packing and crate packing for shipment last Thursday.
Delta Kappa Gamma Theta Chapter held a Friday evening meeting at Mrs. Jane Traylor's home. Guest speaker T. J. Mayfield presented the Health Education program to members including Misses Helen Chase Ima Fairly Louise Ranking Katherine Smith Bess Johnston Clara Shoemaker and women Mrs Luella Clark Mrs Joyce Farmer and Mrs Jane Traylor. Refreshments were served.
Mr and Mrs 8 K Gass and Mrs Lizzie Tyra of Ysleta Texas were in town Saturday to attend the funeral of the late Judge Marsalls.
