Bob Sarter Named Lordsburg Postmaster

Brenda Collins reports Bob Sarter is the new Lordsburg Postmaster succeeding Kent Simmons. Sarter, a New York native who arrived in town Monday, says he prefers small towns to city life and plans to engage locally after a 20 year Postal Service career that included teaching management courses and serving as Superintendent of Mails in Tucson.

Lordsburg School Board Swears In New Members and Elects Officers

Helen Allred and Bob Lowery were sworn in by Judge Ed Cramer at the meeting. The board elected Fritz Placencia president, Bob Lowery vice president, and Dennis Estrada secretary. Principal Vance Lee announced Lordsburg High School’s top decathlon results and mock trial success, with plans for regional and state events.

Doporto Gets 10 Year Term for Armed Robbery Attempt

Johnny Doporto, who pled no contest on January 23 to attempted armed robbery and aggravated battery, both third degree felonies, was sentenced February 17 by District Judge Lee Vesely to 10 years in the New Mexico Corrections Department. The incident at Shady Grove on May 30 left Nick Paulos severely cut, requiring over 100 stitches. Doporto receives credit for 261 days pre sentence confinement from Hidalgo County Jail starting May 30, 1992.

Lordsburg Wins 1993 Class AA Academic Decathlon Title

Lordsburg High School clinched its second straight state Decathlon crown at UNM Johnson Gym edging Tularosa after nine events and a Super Quiz finale. LHS scored 3200 points, with standout performances by Justin Jorgenson 600, Candie Musquiz 800, Roger Villa 800, Ben Ponder and team members in math, science and arts.

Museum seeks Hidalgo sports memorabilia for display

The Lordsburg Hidalgo County Museum Board requests donations of sports memorabilia from Hidalgo County for items 40 years old or older. Acceptable materials include pictures mementos souvenirs trophies newspaper articles schedules team rosters and more. Contact Clemente Baisa at 542-3566 to arrange donations.

Marijuana seized in Hidalgo County by deputies

The Hidalgo County Sheriff's Department seized 37.25 pounds of marijuana in the early morning of February 23 in the southern part of the county. Sheriff Bob Hall said a 1980 Ford pickup was seized and two illegal aliens were arrested. The truck and detainees were turned over to U S Customs. The street value was about 29,800 dollars.

Carnival Coming to Hidalgo County Fairgrounds This Weekend

Bennett Amusement will bring a carnival to Hidalgo County Fairgrounds March 4 5 6 and 7 sponsored by the Hidalgo County Fair Board and Rockamania per County Extension Agent Charlie Siepel. Hours start 6 PM Thursday and Friday 1 PM Saturday and Sunday with rides all you want for seven dollars between 2 and 6 PM on Saturday and Sunday.

State To Fix Lighting At Interchanges

The New Mexico State Highway Department will provide minimal lighting at three interchanges in Lordsburg. Built over 25 years ago, the current system prompted the upgrade with above and below ground work planned. A new lighting and maintenance agreement will be signed with Lordsburg and the project is slated for the 1993 94 fiscal year.

Lordsburg Mock Trial Team Wins Regionals

Lordsburg High School Mock Trial Team captured its sixth straight regional title at Las Cruces on February 20, finishing with a perfect 2-0 record. They advance to the State Finals in Albuquerque March 12-13 as one of the top seeds, after successfully prosecuting and defending a high school security guard in the regional rounds.
