Soldiers at Lordsburg Internment Camp enjoyed a charity smoker with boxing bouts followed by a dance after 12 o clock. Coffee and doughnuts were provided by Sgt Robert Roach, Gpl L F Short and Cpl Joe Bowers of the 311th, marking the unit's first sponsored social event with strong enthusiasm for more ahead.
Soldiers from the M. P. Companies and 311th 309th and 410th units staged a boxing and wrestling program at the camp recreation hall. Col Louis A Better oversaw, with Sgt. support. bouts featured Weatherford, Hogue, Mullen, Graf, and others, ending with a decision for Exito over Colpez in the lightweights and a lively crowd following every match.
The Lordsburg Red Cross notes 926 hours knitted in January and February led by Lt. Margaret Burton. Key volunteers include Mrs. L. J. Balch and several others. Mrs. Smart thanks contributors and calls for more hours between 2 and 5 on Thursdays. First Sgt. Earl Leevey is now Warrant Officer and will attend school in Dallas.
Mrs. Roscoe C. Baker wife of Lt. Col Baker was surprised at a Tuesday birthday celebration in the officers club. Col Louis A. Ledbetter announced a dinner and 55 guests joined in singing and sharing cake and ice cream.
Lt. and Mrs. H. H. Traylor were presented a silver gift Tuesday at the club by Lt. Philip Bond as officers and their ladies looked on.
Capt. C. E. Jack and Lieutenants A. H. Ellis C. H. Dater and H. C. Brinkeeter were ordered Friday to a special service school in the east. The officers left Wednesday. Lt. Margaret Burton and Mrs. O. J. Smart traveled to El Paso on Thursday, with Mrs. Smart planning rail travel to Colorado Springs to visit relatives and Lt. Burton bound for New York.
Capt. R. C. Dole reports back to Lordsburg after a ten day leave spent in New Orleans.
Lordsburg earned widespread praise for hosting the fourth district basketball tournament Friday and Saturday. Eleven towns competed despite gas and fire rationing. Silver City won first place with Cliff second and Hurley third as trophies arrive for the winning teams.
A group of ladies, wives of Brown Brothers Construction workers at Road Forks, meet at Mrs Gray’s home to sew for the Red Cross twice weekly. They recently delivered twenty five blouses and list members including Mesdames Gray Sam Rother Harold Stallings Arthur Blackwood Pete Briggs Webb Leroy Evans Walter Brown and Misa Austin. Attend Red Cross Thursday either 2 pm or 7 pm.
The Lordsburg Boy Scouts announce Scoutmaster Ben Everett will depart next week to join the Army Air Corps. He has guided the troupe for several years and will be missed by the boys who admire his service and dedication.
Episcopal services will be held next Sunday evening at 7 30 at the Woman's Club building. Bishop Stoney will be present and Rev George Wood of Lases will attend. Visitors will be welcome.
Mrs Willis Lacy remains at Santa Rita Hospital tending her ill father M L Dannely who has been ill for weeks. She thanks friends for letters and messages and is missed by Rainbow Girls Eastern Star Red Cross and friends in Lordsburg and at the Banner Mine.
The Junior Auxiliary girls will meet with Mrs. Riddley Scott on Wednesday March 10 at 5 p.m.
Classified as a pilot at the Santa Ana California air base Carl K Dunlap informed his father he has begun piloting with only two weeks of training.
Radford Girls' School defeated El Paso public schools in a school quiz broadcast on KROD. Sandra Day, a Radford member, was a winner on her team, drawing special attention at the Day ranch.
Pfe H Reher was recently appointed camp librarian. The library is an interesting place to improve your time and Pfe H Reher will gladly assist in selecting any book you wish to read.
Mrs Evie L Braden public school nurse of Paris Texas has been added to the medical staff at Station Hospital.
Lt Ruby Helms of the ANC departed Monday for Camp Bowie in Texas after four months stationed at the Station Hospital.
D A Bryce FBI chief of El Paso district led a Tuesday night quarterly gathering at Lordsburg City Hall attended by about fifty peace officers and officers from southwestern Arizona. Col Louis A Ledbetter spoke on internment camp concerns while Rep H Vearle Payne offered insights on arrests.
A community warning urges children and parents to avoid kites near power lines. It lists six rules including using dry cotton string and open fields away from wires, and cautions that metal or wet strings can cause fatal shocks or service interruptions.
Among the visitors in Lordsburg during the basketball tournament were Prof. John Amy of Silver City, Mr. and Mrs. Glen Moses, and Darlene Hatch, Mr. and Mrs. Robt. Pierce of Deming, Mr. and Mrs. F. H. Lynn of Anthony, Mr. and Mrs. R. R. Lewis and daughter of Reserve, and Supt. J Cloyd Miller of Deming.
Delbert Wilkinson underwent a major operation at an army hospital in Miami Florida. He is reported recovering as well as could be expected and his wife Mrs Wilkinson was en route to Miami when word arrived that he is much better.
Mrs Pard Rogers received from the San Diego naval base the official paper with a photograph of eight sailors including James Booby Rogers dressed as chorus girls. The Navy show was wildly popular and Warner Brothers directors asked the boys to perform at the studio. the production was hailed as the season’s best hit.
Last Monday the Lordsburg Hidalgo Library board met with Mrs Bethel Fuller presiding. February circulation reached 730 books and 92 magazines. New acquisitions include Washington Is Like That and Battles for the Solomons. Mrs O H Winn and Mrs A V Broun donated items. Mrs Jennie Gass resigned as treasurer, replaced by Mrs H G Rountree. Attendees included Mrs Bethel Fuller and others.
Mr. and Mrs. Junior Jones and their seven month old daughter Caroline traveled by air from El Paso to Fort Worth to see Mrs. Matilda Jones who has been ill. The baby enjoyed the air cruise.
M. S. Asbell of El Paso, authorized Rock of Ages dealer, installed monuments on the 8. M. Chase, Lovett and P. M. McInnis lots at Mountain View Cemetery this week.
The Beta Sigma Phi sorority met Tuesday evening at Miss Freida Coffey home. After officer elections refreshments followed with games. New officers are President Miss Freida Coffey, Vice President Mrs Ruthe Foxworth, Recording Secretary Miss Gladys Whisnant, Corresponding Secretary Miss Mary Louise Noce, Program Committee Miss Gladys Gene Malone and Mrs Dorie Posey.
Allan Hood left Tuesday on a business trip to Albuquerque Santa Fe Hobbs and Rowell and other cities in New Mexico. He was accompanied by Mrs Hood and daughter Merilyn. Mrs Frank Hindman is caring for Jane and Billy during their absence.
The City Hall clerk's office is split into three rooms including a reception area a general work room and a private office for the clerk. Partitions are in place and after painting and staining the woodwork the space will be attractive and convenient for Miss Judy Klement and Mr John Q Public.
Reverend Percy Krewson of the Lordsburg Church of Christ will lead the regular USO Vesper services. The gathering meets in the K P Hall auditorium at 8 15 p m each Sunday and invites all soldiers at the Internment Camp and civilians to attend for community worship.
The USO lists hostess assignments for next week with names like Mr and Mrs RR VY Traylor Friday and Miss Margaret Fuller Saturday and Mrs W P Winters Sunday afternoon. Blas Noche spent Monday in Silver City.
The Southern Pacific Company maintains about a hundred workers at Lordsburg with 21 in the office 42 in the roundhouse and a growing permanent staff plus transient crews tearing out old turntables and laying new tracks. Advertisements seek workers especially for weekends and even strong women. War production traffic is enormous and civilians accept wartime inconveniences as the nation speeds supplies.
A proclamation notes 195 of the 460 quota obtained with a deadline of March 41. It states teachers or students may be deferred after enlisting in the tea nerve corps until the school year ends, and small groups of women enlisting together may train as a unit.
Reports from the Lordebury Hospital state Mrs T A Kerr remains very ill with little hope of recovery.
Mrs. J. G. Coffey and Miss Freida Coffey, Ming Hetty Been, and Mrs. Paul Hudson were seen visiting in Silver City on Monday.
Washington reports that 150000 disaster victims in Spring Valley Wisconsin and others were aided by the American Red Cross last year. Relief included food shelter medical care clothing and epidemic precautions as officers surveyed damages and began rehabilitation. The wartime program expanded with civilian defense mobilization and submarine action aid.
A wartime plea urges citizens to support Red Cross disaster groups and Civilian Defense. It emphasizes readiness, fear of bombing reaching home, and asks families to give generously to aid those affected by conflict.
During wartime civilians are urged to attend Red Cross nutrition classes to improve diet, reduce strain on hospitals, and support the war effort. Miss Hendrix leads a 12 lecture course with slides and displays, to be held Thursday at 7 30 in the High School Home Ec room.
A Westinghouse Airbrake Company luncheon drew S. P. magnates and engineers to Hidalgo Grill Thursday. Among attendees were division superintendent H. S. Fairbank, V. Villette, C. Layton, N. Booker, and R. F. of E. and D. R. Collens, noted as a mighty busy group.
Judge A W Marshall presided in a very brief court term with routine business. District Attorney Hodges attended. Nobia Reetor and Bernita Hendricks spent the weekend in El Paso. Visitors included Mrs Edith Wilson and Mrs. Edith Wilson.
