A report from Lordsburg describes home life in the internment camp with stories of families adapting to trailers and adobe huts amid war. It notes the camp flag poles and lists officers, transfers, and personnel movements, including visits, leaves, and hospital cases in El Paso and Los Angeles.
H. C. Stall of the motor transfer division received orders transferring him to New Orleans. He departed Tuesday for the new assignment.
Saturday evening at the officers club featured a formal party with Lt. Philip Bond as master of ceremonies. A dance in which officers drew guest names from a bowl preceded a midnight supper of meats and salads. A large birthday cake honoringly sliced for Mrs. James Parker marked her February 20 birthday with attendees including Col. Louis A. Lector and Lt. Col. and Mrs. R. C. Ba and Lt. Col. and Mrs. James Par.
Mrs Eirsman hosted guests at a coke to honor Mrs Reed of Des Moines whose son was stationed at the internment camp. Attendees included Mrs Baker James Parker Safford Tinker Balch Jack Sturm Mitchell Northman Ellis Crews Capps Hughes Dater Austin and others.
The 29th annual New Mexico Cattle Growers Association convention in Albuquerque on March 12 and 13 promises to be the most important meeting of its kind in the state. Governor Dempsey declares Stockmen's Mobilization Days and calls for full cooperation. About 5600 advance hotel reservations indicate a record turnout, with over 186 new members sought to raise total membership above two thousand.
Col. Hugh M. Milton on leave from the army and Col. Lyons were welcomed by the Chamber of Commerce Tuesday on their way to a western station. Army life agrees with our popular educator.
The 309th Military Police Escort Guard Company marked its first birthday on February 20, 1943, at Lordsburg after activation at Fort Bliss on February 20, 1942. The event included a luncheon for officers and spouses with remarks from Col. Louis A. Ledbetter and Lt. Col. James Parker, plus a guest nurse. Second Lieut. James Parker, son of Lt. Col. Parker, was assigned to Goodfellow Field Texas as a flying instructor.
Five men reported to the Reception Center at Fort Bliss for service in the army. They are Daniel A. Diaz, Fred J. Ewing, Alfonso S. Beltri of Lordsburg, Robert L. Johnson of Virden, and Fletcher Antery Jr. of Animas.
Word reached here last week that Set A C Gruel graduated from the advanced gunnery school at Las Vegas Nevada and has been transferred to Hammer Field California.
Miss Olive Harper traveled to Santa Fe last week and is now a WAAC. She will complete the current school year as a teacher at Wilson School before being assigned to duty.
An avi ation cadet began training at Moore Field Texas then proceeded to Central Instructor's School at Kelly Field for further instruction.
Rev. H. T. Ray will conduct USC Sunday Vesper services at 8 16 p m. A hearty welcome is extended to the soldiers and their friends.
Floyd C Kimble announces the annual Kimble Hereford bull sale March 6 at the A avenue barn in Douglas Arizona featuring 100 Domino strain bulls aged 12 to 24 months weighing 7100 to 1100 pounds. Seventy bulls are penned for viewing with care regimens including maize seed and hay. All sale proceeds go to the Red Cross.
Little Ellen Zimmerman daughter of Mrs. J F Hughes entertained a group of playmates at a Saturday birthday party celebrating her seventh birthday.
Lt and Mrs E W Mitchell returned to Lordsburg on Friday following a six week absence.
Mr and Mrs Joseph Carp entertained guests at their home on Tuesday evening. Attending were Mesdames R Baker and W P Churchill.
Capt. C. E. Jack of the 309th MPEG Company was chosen to deliver the Layman Day message at Lordsburg Methodist Church. He previously spoke for Pearl Harbor Day and Armistice Day and has appeared on other occasions with credit. Army wives attending the Red Cross event on February 18 included Mesdames R. C. Baker R. S. Dockum A. H. Ellis F. F. Northman and C. J. Smart.
The pastor will preach at 11 Sunday with music from the choir. The church thanks Capt Clarence E Jack Dr Austin Mr Bonar Donald Johnson Roy Melugin Mr Coffman and others for a refreshing service last Sunday. Rev F R Poage invites all to attend and join.
Word from Lt Myles Cohen stationed at Camp Claiborne Louisiana confirms his promotion to First Lieutenant. The announcement notes the rank upgrade and lists the posting as the promotion event.
The second Vesper Service will be held at the K P Hall Sunday at 3 16 led by Rev Harris T Ray of the Baptist Church. Civilians and soldiers urged to attend following a well received USO sponsored service last Sunday afternoon by Adj B W Glaeser.
City Clerk Miss Judy Klement reports El Paso Natural Gas Company’s 38 percent rate cut and Lordsburg City Council action lowering domestic and commercial gas rates by about $8,000 annually. The tiered rates start at 200 cu ft or less at $1.80, 9,800 cu ft at 0.45, 40,000 cu ft at 0.40, excess at 0.80, with estimated 1941 savings of $7,895.65.
The Red Cross adopted a new card system to record hours volunteers give to production. Mrs. Austin maintains the card index. Ten slips and nine blouses arrived from Mrs. Smith, with many more slips and blouses due by June. Volunteers are urged to sew early Thursday to complete items and begin hospital supplies for new hospitals.
Sgt. and Mrs. Charlie Foxworth traveled to Beaumont Texas last Thursday due to the illness of Sgt. Foxworth’s father L G Foxworth Sr. He suffered a skull fracture from a fall from a truck and died Saturday afternoon after their arrival. The body was taken to Warren Texas for burial.
Attillo di Girolamo from Los Angeles leads a team for several days of enemy alien re hearings at the Lordeburg army camp. He is joined by the Enemy Alien Hearing Board members and FBI agent A P LeGrand with William White as interpreter. All hearings are held at the facility.
Courthouse registration continues this week with public school teachers, army wives, and OPA staff aiding sugar rationing signups. Dr. J H Baxter estimated about 2500 registrants by Thursday morning, indicating many still have not gone to the courthouse.
Mrs. T. A. Kerr is taken to Lordsburg Hospital for observation and a checkup. It is hoped she will recover and be up and about soon.
The Methodist Layman's Day was observed last Sunday with a strong turnout. Captain Clarence E. Jack of the 300th Military Police Escort Guard Company delivered a masterful address on The Methodist Church in World Reconstruction, urging nations to win the peace and America to lead in rebuilding.
George Christopher of the OPA outlined point rationing and how to obtain and use the ration books at a courthouse gathering. He spoke to teachers and registration helpers in the morning and closed with a poem about choices in war effort.
Felix Gauthier Jr son of Mr and Mrs Felix Gauthier of Anim as received his wings and commission as Second Lieutenant in the Army Air Corps at Mather Field California He married Ava Grace Heller of Sacramento California They will reside in Yuma Arizona where he is stationed as one of Uncle Sam's pilots Congratulations Lieutenant
Episcopal services will be held in the Woman's Club building Sunday evening March 7. Bishop Stoney will be present and the church program will be organized.
Major and Mrs Churchill hosted a Monday night viewing at the Churchill home. Major Churchill operated his projector for over an hour, displaying technicolor films taken by himself, Mrs Churchill, Col and Mrs Baker, and the Kauns. The reel included a day with the Jap cub and clips from Florida and Brazil. A luncheon followed with guests including Mr and Mrs Robert Pragle and others.
Lt James Redford of Camp Bowie Brownwood Texas is promoted to Captain Redford. He is married to June Brooks daughter of Mr and Mrs Homer Brooks with ties to Lordsburg friends.
