A reception for all Regional Tournament fans players and coaches is set for Friday March 3 from 3 p.m. to 5 30 p.m. in the Cafetorium. Sponsored by local citizens and the S H S National Honor Society and Cheerleaders will serve. The public is invited.
A routine speeding stop in Lordsburg Sunday night led to the arrest of Charles A. Brown and Amanda A. McGuire and the seizure of more than 150000 in burglary loot from a Marietta Ohio residence. The haul included rifles, a safe with cash and documents, jewelry, rings, coins and CDs. Brown faces local marijuana charges while authorities coordinate with Ohio and Arizona on further action.
The Republican Party of Hidalgo County will hold a pre-primary nominating convention at the county courthouse at 7:30 p.m. on March 9 to elect delegates to the New Mexico State Pre-primary convention scheduled for Saturday April 1 at the University of New Mexico Student Union Building in Albuquerque.
Sunshine Haven Nursing Home gains a 60 day extension to address deficiencies and will be re inspected by May 31. Danny Humphrey arrives as new administrator, with a long Health Care Admin career including FAA medical certifications and leadership roles at Lovelace, Lea General and other NM facilities.
Lordsburg High School hosts the Region H Tournament with Mavericks facing Dexter after beating Animas 85-80 to win District 6-AA. Animas meets Jal at 6 30 p.m. Friday, followed by Lordsburg versus Dexter at 8 p.m. Tickets are 2 dollars adults 1 50 students with gates opening 5 15 p.m. Friday.
Lordsburg officials heard progress reports in a regular session. Ena Mitchell presented the senior citizens program annual report. Bill Collins detailed chamber advertising efforts and distributed campaign materials. Dick Dockum updated on golf course work. City Attorney Paul Sherman warned of March court cases and potential administration changes. A 16 year old involved in the Road Forks Chevron robbery was sent to Los Angeles on a murder warrant. Coronel remains jailed in Hidalgo County on aggravated kidnap and aggravated assault warrants.
City voters on Tuesday March 7 will choose a new mayor and five council members. Three candidates run for mayor Alan Koff Felipe Alvarez and Glenn Dorsett. Ward Three five seats include Gilbert Mora facing Sherrilyn Arredondo for the two year term and Joyce Baxter versus Maura Rice for the four year seat. Ward One council seat Richard Allen runs unopposed Harold Jorgenson not seeking re election Ward Two Eugene Noce unopposed Ward Four Donald Frazier seeks re election facing Pablo Diaz Municipal judge Jesus Estrada stands unopposed for re election.
Lordsburg voters will choose municipal officers on March 7 1978 in a bilingual sample ballot listing terms and candidates Felipe P Alvarez as independent. The ballot shows two year and four year term options with Spanish translations and a single vote per person.
