Reception a tremendous success at Lordsburg High

Lordsburg High officials praised the pre tournament reception held last Friday in the Cafetorium as a tremendous success and thanked the school community for food and time contributions from the school and athletic departments.

Flooding Tension Lingers Across Gila Basin Area

Weekend rains caused extensive flooding across eastern Arizona with the Gila River running bank to bank in many spots. In Clifton two people were evacuated from Duncan Valley as farmland flooded while bridges remained passable. River gauges at Red Rock and Duncan monitored reports to farms and homes. Officials warned residents to stay off muddy surfaced roads as high water receded. The Whitewater campground and nearby roads closed in the Gila National Forest, while Lake Roberts spillway water ran one foot deep and the Sapillo flood plain filled with debris.

Three Men Taken Into Custody In Rockhound Robbery

Three men were arrested near the Myers Motel in Lordsburg shortly before 9 p.m. Thursday March 2 in connection with an armed robbery of the Rockhound Steak House between Deming and Columbus. Suspects Charles Magy 26 of Deming Timothy S Crossman 21 and Randolph K Smith 22 both of West Virginia were tied to the case, with about $50 in cash a bottle of whiskey a shotgun and a pistol found among them. Deming sheriff's officers served arrest warrants Friday charging the trio with armed robbery.

Democrats Set Local Confab For March 14

Hidalgo County Democratic pre cinct and county convention will be held Tuesday March 14 at 7 p.m. in the Courthouse. Eight delegates will be selected to attend the state pre primary convention in Albuquerque during the meeting. Resolutions will be accepted from the floor and delegates challenges will be heard at 8 p.m. Leroy McCarty Hidalgo County Democratic Chairman urges all county Democrats to attend.

Koff Wins Lordsburg Mayor Seat In Progess Ticket Sweep

Political veteran Alan A. Koff regains the mayor’s chair in Lordsburg with a Progress Ticket victory. He leads with 353 votes as three council seats go with him, while Felipe Alvarez 243 and Glen Dorsett 150. Independent Mora wins Ward Three. Diaz takes Ward Four. unopposed judges and trustees noted. Total turnout 759, down from 1094 four years ago.

Lordsburg Hidalgo County Chamber of Commerce manager John Robertson reports inquiries about jobs and property in the rural area have risen by about 20 percent from last year. He notes the callers are mainly nonretirees seeking work and housing, puzzled by the lack of local factories.

Lordsburg School Board Approves Repairs And Schedule Change

Lordsburg Municipal School Board held a regular meeting Monday at the superintendent’s office. They bid sidewalks at R V Traylor School fencing at Middle School and a wiring and moving contract for portable buildings. A second week April meeting was set due to out of state travel. Dr Joel Price reported on a state audit and Paul Jewell on special education rules. Principal Henry Marrufo noted an association meeting. A home bound teaching program funded by a Las Cruces group will begin to meet federal law requirements.

Police warn against tailing emergency vehicles in Lordsburg

New Mexico State Police and Lordsburg police issued a stern warning after officers cited 15 drivers Tuesday evening March 7 for following a fire truck responding to a small blaze on Lordsburg's east end. State Officer Dan Harris stressed interfering with emergency vehicles is illegal.

City Bus Stop Tensions Prompt Citations for Chasing Cars

Warning from Lordsburg Police Chief Bob Hall cites a growing problem in the city as officers ordered to issue citations to anyone pursuing an emergency vehicle. Police also remind motorists that March 2 is the deadline for 1978 vehicle registration and tags. Beginning March 13, officers will cite vehicles without 1978 plates or tags.
