Newlywed Culbersons Settle Near Lordsburg Party Life

Mr and Mrs Shenwood Culberson reside on the old Rainholt ranch 16 miles northeast of Lordsburg. They greet friends here Tuesday and plan to split time between cattle ranching and hosting social events with Sheawood’s brother Victor staying with them part of the time.

The legislature completed its biannual session enacting laws with mixed results. Senator Atwood and Representative Wamel played prominent roles and have credited themselves and their district for their conduct in the deliberations.

Boundary Dispute Ties Rage to Fatal Shooting in Red Rock

Years of boundary quarrels between landholders William J. Crreton and Thomas Nichols culminated in Nichols shooting Cureton, who died shortly after. Nichols surrendered in Silver City, with investigations by Sheriff Mathews and District Attorney Hodges. The incident occurred amid land claims and homestead filings near Red Rock, where Cureton planned building projects and moving a home. The tragedy unsettled the region and Nichols remains held in jail in Silver City.

Rural Rehabilitation Plan Visit Highlights New Mexico Counties

M F Bouts, Rural Rehabilitation District Supervisor, toured Hidalgo county this week. He oversees seven southern New Mexico counties including Dona Ana Luna Grant Hidalgo Catron Socorro and Sierra. The program aims to restore farmers to their prior status after drought and low mood, financed by a state corporation. Thirty applications have been approved by the local board and financing is tentatively set to begin by March first.

Arrested for Burglary in Liquor Arrest and Robbery Charge

Police picked up Trinidad Navarrio Monday morning on intoxication but released by Judge Marsalis. In the afternoon he was arrested for unlawful entry to commit robbery and identified by Miss Tommy Jones who lives with her mother Mrs Jones and sisters Geraldine and Mrs W W Purcell. Navarino is held in the county jail awaiting court action.

Lordsburg Lions face the strong Duncan Merchants in a Monday 7:30 game at Central Gym. Miraculous Escape From a Deming Auto Wreck

Ed Clark Neil Burke and Raymond Hormacher escaped a three or four spin collision with a truck near Lordsburg after a Deming basketball game. All three were thrown clear from the car with no serious injuries, while others riding nearby note a fatal possibility in the rumble seat plan.

Colonial Tea Hosts Antique Display in Ulster County Home

Mrs. W C Mearns hosted a Colonial Tea last Friday with a darkened drawing room lit by candles. The event featured antique curios including a Rose of Sharon quilt about a century old and a 1800 Ulster County Gazette funeral notice for George Washington, with numerous guests in period costumes and a minuet danced under Miss Ada Coyner’s direction.

Eight Teams To Participate In Cage Tournament Here

Lordsburg hosted an invitational basketball tournament on Saturday March 16 featuring eight teams from Lordsburg Duncan Silver City Virden Deming Willcox Bowie Machita and the Lordsburg Lions. The Duncan Merchants who won last weekend’s invitational will seek another trophy. games require three wins to claim the title. Trophies donated by local businesses and individuals include a large silver loving cup and gold silver bronze basketballs for top finishers. Admission ranges from 7 cents to 35 cents depending on ticket type.

State Teachers College Gains Full Accreditation

Silver City February 27 Special to the Liberal State Teachers College at Silver City is now fully accredited following the American Association of Teachers Colleges meeting in Atlantic City. Hail McKenney pilot J W Mc Kenzie cartographic engineer and Warren T Jameson mechanic of the Coast and Geodetic Survey are at Lordsburg airport to begin sectional airway maps showing geography boundaries and notable features.
