A group returned by motorbus with several new cars, two Oldsmobiles two Plymouths and a Ford, all described as the latest models and in fine condition.
Mr and Mrs S A Clark and Miss Isabel Herndon arrived from Silver City Tuesday to tour Bill Shellberg and the Community Public Service Company. They found operations moving along smoothly and progressing as expected.
The Hidalgo Hotel Company stockholders met in Lordsburg on Tuesday evening for its first Lordsburg gathering in over six years. Leaders praised management and the hotel’s valued capital investment as El Paso and Arizona markets show growth. Directors elected included Robert E. McKee Charles N. Bassett H L Birney W F Ritter and Gus Momsen.
A blaze started about 3:00 AM Saturday behind Cueto's New Way Wholesale Grocery at Railroad Avenue and Shakespeare Street. An overheated partition between the railway club and the store caused smoke in the front room. police Bradberry and Morris alerted owner Cueto who stopped the fire before the fire department arrived. Damage estimated at 800 dollars, limited to rear flour stock. The officers’ vigilance prevented a larger disaster.
Last Saturday night in Phoenix couple Spear Kemball and Thelma Kemball with Mrs WIM traveled to Lordsburg for a marriage by the Justice of the Peace who arrived from bed for the ceremony. Witnesses included M Jolly Roy Clark Pen E F Sanders and George Swichard. Guests woke to praise Lordsburg water as the finest in the United States.

A banquet and conference in Clifton drew about 100 game lovers from Phoenix Tucson Bisbee Safford and Lordsburg. Lordsburg officials KR W Cureton and Frank Weldon attended as representatives. Discussion focused on restocking Frisco river with smallmouth bass and channel catfish and Clifton learned of a proposed Junior game association while Lordsburg asserted leadership in regional activities.
A February 14 Valentine Party at Rev. and Mrs. C. Walker's home honored the hostesses' Sunday School class and the Epworth League. Themed with a Valentine motif, the event featured the game Hearts and a refreshment spread by Jimmie Cueto. Guests included June Brooks, Lola Jane Graham, Anna Mae Yarbrough, and many others.
Mr and Mrs Frank McCarthy and their eighteen month old daughter Frances Louise stayed with Coach and Mrs Ehrhardt this week. The McCarthys, once residents here, are now in Hager man where their former wife is active in community service including chairing a housing program.
The librarian lists 17 children’s titles including Chicken Little Three Little Pigs and Hansel and Gretel for young patrons. J. H. Clark library publicity chairman notes three library chairs donated to the board.
Seven Lordsburg high school girls who staged a military drill at the birthday ball under Miss Ada Coyner prompted a White House reply. The girls Pauline Gibson Joanna Bounds Ernes tina De Lay Lola Jane Graham Grace Wallace Mary Louise Noche and Helen Lopes were photographed and sent to the White House.
A large crowd attended the regular PTA meeting on Monday evening. The program featured songs led by Mr. Mearns, readings by Shirley Henslee, Ralph Jones reciting Gettysburg Address, and musical numbers by Mildred Conner, Ruth Wood, and Frank Ramirez including Chopin and Liszt pieces. Benediction by Supt. Palm ended the event.
The Colonial Tea program by the Methodist Missionary Society features a display of antiques at Mrs. W. C. Mearns home from 3 PM to. Readings and musical selections include Washington in Music Saxophone Solo Eplegie Mias sanet Reading The Good Old Times Dorothy Meannis Vocal Solo Sylvia Warren Fuller Myre Play's Relation to Washington Mrs. Thomas E. Mrs Frank Stengele hosted a 1 Bridge Luncheon on February 14 honoring Mrs R W Aldrich of Roswell. Invited guests included J H Clark J L Augustine Banks Austin W A McAndries Maurice Eppstein Glenn Moses H L Scofield Tom McCabe Henry Stengele and the honoree. Mrs McAndries won the high score prize. Enchiladas fruit cup cookies and coffee were served.
Mesdames J. F. Allen S. E. Allen S. M. Chase A. L. Green E. S. Lewis R. A. Palm H. L. Scofield and George Trimble attended from 3 to 5 p m with hostess. Guests included Mesdames Isaac Van Meter C. A. Winterholer Clyde Baker J. L. Wells. A salad course sandwiches cocoanut macaroon and coffee were served.
The only gun of its type seen here was picked up by Juan Cervantes from a tourist last week. The peculiar model, made in 1878 by the Guardian and American Company, uses a rim fire 32 shell. Observers say no other instrument this century operates like it.
Jesse T. Smith Jr was a weekend guest of Thomas Johnson at the Johnson ranch south of Animas.

The Lions Club held an unusually good meeting on Tuesday with Lion Jef fus filling in for President Austin. Guests included Frank McCarthy of Hagerman and Lt. Northrop from Red Rock CCC camp. plans surfaced for a Lions sponsored basketball tournament and a cubs initiation next Tuesday. Mayor EDeMoss was elected to membership.
Mrs. J. S. Vaught wife of the former District Attorney now a successful Albuquerque lawyer arrives with her son J. S. Vaught Jr on the way to Los Angeles for a brief coast vacation. Also traveling Miss Ann Vaught and Miss Ora McNiell sister of Mrs Vaught.
Pyramid Lodge Knights of Pythias initiated eight new members to first rank Tuesday night. In the past MO days there have been eight reinstatements, a net gain of 2 percent, a possible New Mexico record. Candidates included Harold Scofield Dwight Griffin David Wright M B Fowler David B Smith Charles D Elkin K Leonard and Edward Clark. Knight Holt spoke on the order's 7th birthday, followed by a buffet supper for about 36 attendees. A telegram from Supreme Chancellor Renoe Harp at Frederick Maryland sent congratulations.
Dr. W. J. Sims superintendent of the Southern Methodist Hospital and Tucson District elder will preach at the Louisburg Methodist Church Sunday at eleven. He arrives Saturday afternoon and will visit Duncan Sunday afternoon. All other church services follow the usual hours.
The Tusiness and Professional Women of Lordsburg held a meeting at Mira Olivia Wells’s home with Olivia Wells as chairman of the International Committee. Attendees included Luella Clark Gracie Conner Winnifred Lahan Verna Hancock and Faye Schiefelbein. An International Dinner meeting is planned for February 2 at Hidalgo Court Cafe followed by a program in the Tridalwo lounge with Dorothy McCabe in charge.
Mexican consul Sr Ignacio Batiza and his wife visited on Tuesday while traveling from Detroit to Monterrey California where he will officiate as consul. He praised the Broadway of America and remarked on the highway as he passed Memphis.
Studio Theatre presents a school benefit program starting at 4:30 p m with three continuous shows on Tuesday March 5 Zane Grey Wagon Wheels stars Monte Blue Randolph Scott Gail Patrick Raymond Hatton and Billy Lee in a tale of pioneers wagon trains over the Rockies to Oregon in 1844 directed by Charles Parton
Mrs Felix Jones hosted the Baptist W M S on Wednesday afternoon. The seven ly chapter of John was studied led by Mrs Lester Henslee. Pimento cheese sandwiches Jamon pie and tea were served to Mesdames Frank Hindman Roryn Hindman L C Henslee Sam Gass R E Mayfield H A Brown Rev and Mrs M C Moore and hostess.
Alfred Roos of Silver City travels through Lordsburg en route to Tucson to see his brother Charles Roos, supervisor of Indian Reservations for the United States, who oversees 72 agencies. Roos has 22 years as a mining engineer and formerly led the Great Eagle Mining Company near Red Rock.
Lt. Arthur Fowler of Seminole Oklahoma becomes the CCC camp medical officer. He arrives from the Reserve Corps of the U S Army and this marks his first CCC assignment with headquarters in the officer's building on site.
The many friends of L. Ross are pleased to learn he has recovered from a recent severe illness. His trained nurse has been released and full recovery should be a brief period. Several pneumonia cases have caused anxiety locally but the situation is improving.
Judge George W. Hay presided a Wednesday session with District Attorney Joseph W. Hodges and E. P. McHalifey. Four divorces and one annulment were granted. Odell Still faced a delinquency charge with sentence withheld for good behavior. Charles French pled guilty to grand larceny and received a suspended sentence of 18 months to three years, contingent on nine days in Hidalgo County Jail.
Professor Otto Reutinger from Silver City visited Van Clark over the weekend. They were classmates at the University of New Mexico.
On Friday February 15 at the Bradberrys home Faye Johnson marked her fourth birthday with a party. Guests included Claudine and Charley Ben Olney Dickey Olney Billy Browning Laverne Browning Alice Richens Sugar Man Bradberry Marcia and Mary Jane Egan and Levi Margaret Ruth Lucille Bradberry.
County health nurse Miss Hancock traveled to Hot Spring on Wednesday to participate in a state nurses gathering.
Directors of the newly formed county cattlemen's association for Grant Luna and Hidalgo counties schedule a morning meeting March 2 at 10 o'clock at the Pike club Silver City with a second gathering at 7 PM the same day. Mrs Leonard Slessinger of Santa Barbara Shitodhus was visiting friends last weekend, and the Slessinger family formerly lived at Valedan.
Judge Robert Fr. Mattingly of Washington D C arrived in Lordsburg with Mrs Mattingly and Major H A Werder en route to Hawaii for a winter vacation. They filmed the Hidalgo Hotel crowd and a close-up of the judge inspecting a duplicate yucca cane presented to President Roosevelt.

On February 15 Silver City and Lordsburg high schools played a tight game ending 26 24 after a three minute OT. Junior Jones hit a field goal for the Mavericks in the extra period as Mawin DeMons led with 17 points for Lordsburg Hachita the next night followed with a 26 17 Mavericks top scorer DeMons and Greed McKinney led Hachita with 1 points. Gilbert Shaw, education director, visited Mavericks Pand and invited the group to give a Friday night program in the recreation hall at Red Rock CCC camp. March 15 was chosen as the date with Mr Straw and the camp hosting. A well rounded program is being prepared.
The third grade took first in the checkerboard contest with an average of 70. Coach Moses plans to enter a team in the Junior High Tournament to be held in Deming the week after the high school event.
