An Hidalgo Industrial Development Committee organizes to attract industry to Lordsburg. Fifteen attended the initial meeting at the Civic Center, with Rudy Ramirez as chair and Jane Deerman as secretary. HADECO notes 23 available acres near a nursing home plus Cotton City land with geothermal potential. board meeting set for July 1.
ABC crew filmed Shakespeare, New Mexico once known as Grant and Ralston City for a Good Morning America Americana segment. The canyon town shows phases of mining booms and busts from Butterfield route to diamonds, with final decline after 1893 and current owners Rita and Janaloo Hill guiding tours.
A dust storm near Lordsburg dramatically reduced visibility and triggered a chain-reaction crash on I-10 involving three tractor-trailers and seven cars. Fred William Phillips, 59, of Phoenix, died when his rig struck another tractor trailer. Twelve others were injured, and passengers were taken to Hillcrest General Hospital in Silver City. The Hidalgo County rescue teams aided at the scene as the east and westbound lanes were cleared in stages.
Local officials and business leaders from the Downtown Business Association push a signing program with the State Highway Department to alter I-10 exit signs. The plan, debated since April, proposes listing next three exits for services to draw travelers to Lordsburg. Public input is requested via Traffic Survey P.O. Crime Stoppers requests information about the June 14, 1980 theft of American flags from in front of the Coronado Theatre and Car Wash by Lordsburg Lions Club. A cash reward of up to 100 dollars awaits tips via 542-8200, with anonymous calls permitted. Any resident may become a Crime Stopper by sharing information on local crimes.
The New Mexico Energy and Mineral Department will present on low cost residential solar applications for Lordsburg Senior Citizens and the public on Thursday July 17 at 10 a.m. at the Lordsburg Civic Center with a floor Q A session. July 4 celebrations at Short Park include an 8 am 7 mile run and swimming events with sign ups led by Fred LaMarca and Cecilia Bejarano. A $2 entry fee, trophies for top three, food and game booths, sack races, tug of war, baseball, fireworks, a street dance, and a hamburger eating contest at Sonic Drive-In are planned.
