Chavez Sees Gas Shortage Hurting Southwest New Mexico

Fabian Chavez executive director of the State Department of Development told a Silver City audience with Governor Apodaca that southwest New Mexico faces a natural gas shortage. He urged legislative action to fix the supply gap affecting Grant Luna and Hidalgo counties while noting plans for solar energy and a regional tourism upswing.

Lordsburg Man Held After Saturday Stabbing Incident

Melvin D. Webb a 43 year old Lordsburg man is jailed in Hidalgo County on charges of assault with intent to commit a violent felony and aggravated battery after a Saturday morning stabbing on Railroad Avenue. Herbert Stacey remains in good condition at Hillcrest Hospital in Silver City. Bond set at 20000 has not been posted.

Lordsburg School District Eyes Two Mill Tax Vote

Voters in the Lordsburg School District including Virden residents go to the polls on June 30 to decide a proposed two mill property tax levy for quality education. Polls open at 8 a.m. with precincts 1 2 and 3 at Central Elementary School Gym and precinct 4 at Virden School House.

Lehman Graduates From West Virginia University

Samuel R. Lehman of Lordsburg earned a medical degree at WVU during the 106th Commencement at the WVU Coliseum. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Lehman of Lordsburg among about 250 graduates receiving dental, law, medicine, and pharmacy degrees.

Body Found Along Rail Line Near Lordsburg

Hidalgo County Sheriff Gene Moore reported the discovery of an unidentified black male corpse about 15 miles west of Lordsburg along the Southern Pacific Railroad. The body, pronounced dead at the scene by Medical Examiner Dr. James Baxter, appeared to have fallen from a train and was found Sunday. Deputies Martin and Lara and State Police Officer Luna assisted in the investigation.

Six Arrested Here on Drug Charges

Lordsburg City Police arrested six men on I-10 during a routine van stop for possession of a controlled substance. The group included five out-of-town men and a juvenile. Kelley 25, White 25, Buck 24, White 28, and White 35 were arraigned on possession charges and released, with hometowns unavailable.
