Permission Granted To Place Portable Classrooms At Wilson
Lordsburg Board of Education and Superintendent Carl McMillan discussed plans to place five portable steel classrooms at Wilson Elementary School to improve facilities while retaining students at or near the current site. Parents urged keeping the Wilson location, and officials agreed to pursue state approval for portable buildings. Over 70 people attended the meeting.

Old Timers Beard Growing Contest Set by Association
The Old Timers Association will sponsor a beard growing contest during the fiesta. Registration is July 7 at the Chamber of Commerce office, with beards to be clean shaven at registration and also for late entrants. Claude A. Leyendecker, Democrat, won the Hidalgo-Luna County legislative district delegate seat with 932 votes against Lloyd V. Payne’s 486. Payne led in Hidalgo County for district counts, and voters also approved a three quarter mill levy for Hidalgo General Hospital while results varied by division. Bike Reflector Tape Campaign Sunday
The Veterans of Foreign Wars with the Lordsburg Police Department start a safety drive Sunday to apply reflector tape to bicycles. Beginning at 9 30 am at the police department rear of City Hall, tape will be supplied and applied to bikes brought in for the day and continued through the week with enough tape for 1 000 bicycles.

Red Cross offers a two week swim course starting Tuesday June 24 at Lordsburg City pool with three beginner classes and one advanced class. Each class lasts 30 minutes, runs Tuesday to Saturday mornings 9 to 11, and costs 5 dollars. A senior lifesaving course starts Tuesday July 1 from 8 to 10 p.m. lasting until 20 unit hours, priced at 10 dollars (discount 1 dollar with own book) and 5 dollars for others.
