Tax changes mark 1969 Legislature and new rates
The 1969 Legislature adopted 18 tax bills and resolutions signed by Gov. Cargo. The new structure shifts income and sales taxes effective July 1, with a $25 million state tax increase and higher local taxes amid debates on school funding and property tax reform. The Legislative Finance Committee will review property tax and propose recommendations for January.

CPS and SWS sweep with strong hitting in Thursday games
CPS routed Federal Resources 14 to 4 as Happy Morelos powered three hits including a homer. Sal Gomez earned the win with a double, while Sal Ortega and Lalo Ruiz had two singles each in the CPS attack. FRC benefited from Don Kellar tripling and Ernesto Renterta plus Vic tor Natividad doubling. Southwest Supply beat C&E Auto 8 to 1 with Armando Camacho earning the win and contributing a homer and a single. Rookie Rendon tripled, Raul Arambula and Ruben Bassa doubled. Junior Sucedo led C&E with a triple.

Lordsburg Police Chief Tony Arredondo urges strict enforcement of the city ordinance prohibiting sale or use of explosive fireworks within Lordsburg city limits, with pistols exempted. Violations carry up to $300 in fines and 90 days in jail, and parents may be held responsible for juveniles. Lordsburg hosts the Fourth Annual New Mexico AAU Southwest District Aquatic Championships on July 5 and 6 with 130 events over two days. 250 to 300 swimmers and divers ages 9 to 17 compete in breaststroke, butterfly, backstroke, freestyle, and medleys plus diving. admission is free and programs support the Lordsburg team.

Lions Club Installs Officers At Patio Ladies Night
Frank C. Gabriel was installed as president at a Ladies Night supper in the Harold Bishop residence patio. Steering Committee Meets In Reserve New Mexico
The Steering Council of the Southwest New Mexico 410 Project met in Reserve on June 26 1969 with Hidalgo County officials Ivan Thygerson Sidney Wright Animas Valley Supervisor and Rodney Newton attending Tom Pendleton of the FHA spoke on Farmers Home Administration loans. The committee approved four project proposals adopted a 1970 plan and voted to transfer RC&D funds to the New Mexico State Forest Department. Timber resources on private land in Catron County will be inventoried to attract private businesses.

San Simon forfeited opening game leads to Lulaecs while Prices Creameries beat Elks 15 to 8 with Uresti earning the win and Artiaga the loss. Saucedos def beef First National Bank 15 to 3 as Natividad and Marquez highlight the offense. Lulaes crushed Gan Simon 19 to 0 led by Garcia Arvizo and Granado. VFW edged Prices 6 to 5. Elks slip past Saucedos 4 to 3 as Alvarez and Marquez factor on the mound.
July 4th Festivities Planned at Short Park
Fourth of July events at Short Memorial Park hosted by the City Recreation Department run from 4 30 to 6 30 pm with races near the baseball diamond for all ages. An all star softball game opens at 5 30 pm between San Simon and Lordsburg, with a fallback local game if San Simon does not appear. A Little League game follows at 7 00 pm between Duncean II and Lordsburg LSL on the park slab at 9 30 pm, then dancing to the Elusive Butterflies. Red Cross offers two week sessions starting Tuesday with beginner and advanced classes from 9 to 11 and senior life saving from 7 to 9 evenings. Morning classes cost 5 dollars, Life Saving costs 10 dollars. Sign-ups run 9 am to 4 pm Thursday through Tuesday.

Safford Triumphs in Softball Doubleheader Wins
Safford Funeral Home team swept local FRC and CAE squads Sunday in Safford. First game ended 16 runs to 5 with Sonny Telles earning the win and Felipe Alvarez taking the loss as Ruben Bassa doubled and singled for FRC. Second game saw Safford win 12 to 2 with Ray Polaco the winner and Fred die Levario the loser. Cuco Varelo and John Ruiz led C&E with hits. Lordsburg will visit Safford in two weeks for another contest.
