The annual Fireman's Ball will be held Saturday evening June 21 at the La Fiesta Club with dancing starting at nine. Music by Chano Acevedo and his Tropical Orchestra. Tickets available from Doc Baxter or at the door. Come out and bring friends.
Friday at 2 30 PM in the high school building a party will celebrate annual buyers. Books will be distributed and signatures of attending friends can be added during the event.
The State Tax Commission schedules budget hearings next week in Lordsburg and Virden, Hidalgo county on June 26, and in Bayard, Grant county on June 25. All hearings will be at the Court House in the county seat. Manuel R. Baca, representing the Taxpayers Association of New Mexico, will provide information as requested.
Mrs. B. F. Hassell of Separ announces the marriage of Coline Drews to Jesse Hodge. The ceremony took place at six o clock in the Catholic church in Deming NM with a double ring service. The bride wore white crepe with red rose corsage. attended by Mrs. John Jemecka. Attendants included Mr. Jemecka. The bridegroom’s family and career details follow, noting schooling, military service, and employment. A reception at the Richardson home followed.
The Kuykendall Flying Service on the Duncan Highway has produced a large number of pilots in just over six months since opening. Soloed so far are Kenneth Macnab Leo Cohen O J Richins Gordon Willis Gerald Hunt Odell Stull Fowler Stucke Sidney Wright and Fred Ewing.
Lordsburg and nearby areas received a steady rain with a thunderstorm Tuesday evening and night and Wednesday. Frank Croon reports over an inch of rain from Tuesday and Tuesday night, with similar reports from other sections. Indications point to a bumper grass crop for local ranchers and farmers.
Word was received by Joe B. Moore that C. H. McIntosh, operator of the Atwood Copper Mines, has returned to the states after an extended Honolulu vacation. He stayed at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel and is now at home in Hollywood awaiting the rainy season to end in Lordsburg.
A springtime shower given Saturday by Mrs Bennie Everett at Mrs Moselle Messecars home celebrated Mrs Charles Williams. Guests, including Mrs Marie Prine and Mrs Harry Wallace, enjoyed two to four tea hours, pink and blue decor, daisied booties, iced tea and cakes. The guest list features numerous local ladies.
Invitations had announced a tea for Saturday June 21 hosted by Mrs E Forrest Sanders but the event has been postponed.
A group of 14 licensees and new enrollees including Charles Hoggett Charlies Yelton Clifton Coburn Gilbert Jacobson Virgil Sum Merlin Ernest Butler L Hernandez John Odom and Martin Estrada sign up for early morning aviation courses led by Gail Saseen and Kuy Kendall. Instruction starts at 5 00 am to leverage smooth air for classroom and flight training at the high school building with emphasis on maneuvers.
The Lordsburg Lions voted to install a donated air conditioner in the Woman's Club building their meeting place. Jack Austin of Long Beach California offered the unit and Lions accepted. Lawrence Gay offered free installation and H H Buddy Bryant to cover telephone costs. The unit shipped Thursday and should be installed before the next meeting on Tuesday.
The Business and Professional Women's Club gathered for two pot luck suppers and a business meeting at Mrs. Olivia Wells’s home. Twenty two members attended with one guest Mrs Ollie Castleberry. One new member Mrs Odie Lee Haltom was accepted. The group noted the Hobbs State Convention and planned a July 10 picnic at Mrs Della Cureton’s ranch.
Jean Turner daughter of Mr and Mrs Jesse Turner River City married Thomas A Baker son of Mr and Mrs T L Baker of Deming in a single ring ceremony at noon June 13 conducted by Charles R Fogliasso minister of the Church of Christ in Lordsburg Attendants were Mr and Mrs John Bradford Jr The couple are connected to prominent New Mexico pioneer families and both work for the Soil Conservation Service in Silver City He served 1941 to 1947 in the Naval Air Corps attaining the rank of lieutenant The bride’s father is Silver City Postmaster and her mother active in politics and lodge work The groom’s parents own a ranch near Columbus N M and he has served as an officer in the Agricultural Veterans Training in Hidalgo County.
Superintendent Tom J Mayfield resigns to lead Artesia Public Schools in Artesia New Mexico Population about 7000 80 faculty in Artesia vs 31 here Mayfield served eight years in Lordsburg previously eleven years in Las Cruces He held posts with New Mexico Educational Association and state athletics boards and earned degrees from Mississippi College and the University of New Mexico.

Banner Mine softball team defeats El Paso Natural Gas 12 to 3. Bowmans pitching allowed five hits with two in the seventh inning. Teammates provided strong support as the Pipe Line squad could not string together rallies.
First National Bank board votes 6 percent dividend on 500 shares of 100 value stock payable July 1. Bank shows capital of 50000 and surplus of 50000 with 24000 for Dee Kip, C C Martin, Robert C Martin, C G Perry, and J A Foster.
The Hidalgo County Republicans met on June 7 in R. M. Reynolds's office. Elected officers were County Chairman John L Augustine, Vice-chairman Mrs. Clemente Salazz, Secretary treasurer Mrs. R. M. Reynolds, and State Central Committee members Donald A. McGhee and Luella S. Clark.
Jess A Ballah reports striking a rich copper silver and gold ore vein six miles west of Lordsburg in the Ballah and Thomas Mine. The ore lies 20 feet down in a 4 foot strip and sells for 24 dollars per ton with plans to sink a shaft below 200 feet.
Sugar rationing ended last week with midnight Wednesday. Price controls on sugar remain until October 31 unless Congress extends them. Institutional users like hotels and restaurants gain freedom. industrial users stay under control. Action follows a rise in available sugar.
Next week schedules show Leo's facing Moctezuma on Monday and Plumbers meeting Banner Mine on Tuesday with Moctezuma and Plumbers game halted in the first inning due to rain. Later matchups include Bears versus Kittens and Thunderbolts versus Redskins on Tuesday and Redskins versus Kittens on Wednesday.
