Moody outlines Batchelder Law style protection for citizens

Republican state senate candidate Clifford E. Moody told Hidalgo County Republican Women’s Club at the American Motor Inn that he would introduce legislation mirroring Nebraska’s Batchelder Law. He said it would shield self defense actions against imminent violent crime and urged greater funding for law enforcement and judges to deter crime.

Swimming Lessons Begin At City Pool Monday

Little League Opens With Two Games On Monday Night

Opening night featured Price's over the Elks 10 to 4 as Victor Ding earned the win and Alex Guardiola took the loss. Amin's edged Saucedo's Grocers 12 to 11 with Max Sanchez hitting the lone homer. Elks beat Amin's 7 to 6 on Wednesday with Jon Morales homering and Freddy Levario Jr. winning. Animas forfeited to V.F.W. in the night cap.

Foodliner and Miller Chevrolet win opening softball games

The summer league opener saw Foodliner rally to beat Up-To-Date 14 11 with home run bursts from David Martinez and Felipe Alvarez who also earned the win. Miller Chevrolet led by six early but Smith Ford forced extra innings. Gobble’s triple in the sixth gave Smith Ford a 7 6 win with Reese the winning pitcher. Thursday features Up-To-Date vs Smith Ford and Miller Chevrolet vs Foodliner.

Hidalgo County rep Carter Kirk asks Governor Cargo to convene a special session to probe Health and Social Services Dept with focus on employee conduct. Christopher Schaefer, acting Hidalgo Social Services director, was discharged for cause and replaced by Jerry Standard amid department budget cuts.

Animas School Bond Fails To Pass

Animas Independent School District voters rejected a proposed 180000 bond to add to Animas High School. Sixty nine favored the measure including 56 property owners and 13 non property owners while 78 opposed, 74 property owners and five non property owners. To carry the bond needed a plurality of property owners and overall votes in favor.

Hidalgo County 4-H Elimination Friday at Lordsburg High

The Hidalgo County 4-H elimination will be held Friday June 19 at Lordsburg High School. 4-Hers from Virden and Animos will compete in Clothing Foods Home Improvement Agricultural and General Demonstration. Judging begins 9 am with dress revue at 1 30 pm and a public speaking contest. Public invited.

Republican Platform Subcommittee To Meet in Deming

A Republican Platform Subcommittee will meet Saturday June 20 at the Ramada Inn in Deming to discuss recommendations to the state committee on agriculture ranching and mining. Representing the county are Sherwood Culberson Adair Merrell Clyde Richins and Mrs. Darrow Richins on the subcommittee.
