Animas School Bond Election Endorsed by State Officials

State Superintendent Leonard J. DelLayo urged voting in favor of a $180,000 addition to Animas High School. He noted full endorsement from the State Department of Education staff who evaluated district needs in 1969. Thelma Inmon also backed the bond. Election is next Tuesday the 16 at two precincts, Animas School and Rodeo School.

Lockwood and Williams Resume 100-Unit Low Income Housing Project

Lockwood Construction and Modern Construction restart a joint venture to build 100 units for low to moderate income families in Lordsburg under Section 23 Leased Housing. The $1.5 million project includes single family and duplex homes with completion expected in early 1971 and some tenants by fall 1970. Applications will be accepted by the local Housing Authority.

Watershed Prelim Study Completed In Virden Duncan

Rodney Newton of the Soil Conservation Service announces completion of the Virden Duncan watershed preliminary investigation. The report will be reviewed with the watershed steering committee in Duncan during June 21 to 27. Public invitation to attend the meeting.

Two Robbers Rob Service Station on Highway 80

Two armed robbers held up the Tower Texaco service station just west of town about 30 am. Tony Perea, attendant, said the men used a large pistol and a switch blade to steal about $163. Police set roadblocks but did not catch them.

Work Study Program Inaugurated At Lordshure High School

Approximately 15 high school students will join a new work study program created through a partnership among Lordshire Public Schools the Vocational Rehabilitation Agency and federal and state funding. Students attend morning classes and work in the afternoons gaining English math and social studies instruction tailored to individual needs while earning on the job experience toward graduation.

Recreation Area Use Permits Needed For National Forest Sites

The Forest Recreation Permit is now required across National Forests in designated campgrounds and scenic areas. Fees are $7 annually or $1 daily, with some sites like Lake Roberts in Gila National Forest charging $2 per day. Permits are sold year round at Forest Service offices and at campgrounds via an envelope collection system. failure to display a valid permit can lead to a citation.

Two Local Boys Receive Degrees at NMSU

Bruce D. Harris and Willey D. Kerr, both sons of local residents, earned degrees in spring at New Mexico State University. Harris completed a Bachelor of Business Administration and an Associate in Business Data Processing, while Kerr received a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture.

TV Performer Killed In Hiway Mishap Near Lordsburg

Karl Grant 99 a nationally known TV and club entertainer died when his car left Interstate 10 near the Steins interchange eight miles west of Lordsburg overturning in the median. Roosevelt R. Woods 17 of Phoenix another occupant was also killed when thrown from the car. Grant who had begun an engagement in Juarez last week was en route back to Juarez from Los Angeles when the accident occurred.

McGarrah Earns Superintendent's List Honors at NM Military Institute

Eric Wayne McGarrah of Lordsburg earns a spot on the Superintendent's List for the second semester of 1999 70 academic year at New Mexico Military Institute. Cadets on the Dean's List require a 3.0 GPA or higher, with the Commandant's List recognizing military conduct and discipline. McGarrah qualified for both the Dean's and Commandant's lists and was placed on the Superintendent's List.

Hidalgo County Reports April Savings Bonds Totals

Hidalgo County Chairman Mr. Lewis C. Vencill released April sales figures showing Hidalgo residents invested $2,549. The 1969 April total was $2,746. Statewide April sales reached $1,409,440 with the first four months totaling $6,032,706, about 32.97 percent of the annual quota.
