U S District Judge Yearle Payne barred spraying toxaphene to kill range caterpillars pending a Thursday hearing. The Texas petition claimed toxin would wash into Lake Meredith, the municipal water source for Texas cities. Ranchers argue toxaphene is most effective, while conservationists warn of environmental contamination. Miller's undefeated in men's softball summary

Miller Chevrolet remained undefeated with a 16-1 win over Up-to-Date Grocery as Reese allowed three hits. Earlier Smith Ford beat Foodliner 13-0 with Levario earning the win and Rene Alderette taking the loss. Manuel Rendon homered for Foodliner. In the first game Smith Ford defeated Miller’s 8-5 behind a late St Gonecz home run.

Nursing Home Plan Approved for Lordsburg SBA Lease Guaranty

At a Roswell meeting HADECO and Retirement Ranches directors agreed to finance a 74 bed nursing home on HADECO property in Lordsburg under the SBA Lease Guaranty Program. SBA will guarantee over 2 million in lease payments with American Bank of Commerce providing interim financing.

Vandals Strike Cars At Three Locations

A three site vandalism spree punctured tires on 10 vehicles Tuesday night. One car at Mrs. U F Miller’s home had all four tires punctured and two cars at Mrs. Lindsay’s home were damaged. police say an ice pick was used. The same instrument damaged seven cars near the Miller Chevrolet building. Police chief C C Gray noted sidewall punctures prevent repairs.

Flag Day Speaker Proclaims Constitution as Freedom's Shield

David C. Serna Jr. served as main speaker at Elks Lodge and VFW Flag Day ceremonies in Lordsburg. The Silver City student urged Americans to defend liberty through the Constitution against ignorance and propaganda, stressing citizen effort to uphold democratic ideals.

Thayer Promoted to Chino Mines Assistant General Manager

Frank L Thayer, longtime Kennecott official, promoted from concentrator operations superintendent to assistant general manager of the Chino Mines Division. He will assume the post July 1 and has a 1937 start with the company after training at Denver and Colorado School of Mines.

Morgan Reappointed To State Real Estate Commission

Jack Morgan, a local realtor and member of the New Mexico Realtors Association, was reappointed to the State Real Estate Commission for a five year term by Governor David Cargo. Morgan has served seven years on the commission after first being appointed June 20, 1963, by Gov. Jack Campbell.

City Council Rejects Low Rent Housing Plan in Lordsburg

At a special session the Lordsburg City Council voted to tell HUD the city will not proceed with the low rent housing project. Opponents argued 100 new rental homes are unnecessary while Mayor Betty Lazar cited adverse effects on private rentals and a small local demand. The vote carried to advise HUD of infeasibility as several council members supported the move.

Officer Presents Narcotics Program at Lions Club

Hidalgo County deputy Sheriff Ron Hall spoke at the Lions Club weekly meeting in El Charro about narcotics and dangerous drugs. He demonstrated odor cues using a burn test and showed kit samples, explaining how to identify narcotics and non narcotics. The club's next meeting will install incoming officers during a 7 30 p m covered dish dinner at Dick Dockum residence.
