Hatch tops Poco 14 to 9 in a high octane opener as Hatch pitchers dominate except for a late surge by Poco. In the second game Poco edge CPS by four, aided by an eight run fourth inning and solid hitting.
Leon H. Harms announces rule changes for the New State Fair Queen contest. Eligible contestants aged 16 to 19 from every county may compete with one finalist per county. Contestants stay nine days at the fair September 26 to October 4, housed in the Youth Hall with meals there.
All girl scouts must bring cuts and equipment to Harold by Sunday June 21 before 9 am. Early arrival advised for readiness and organization at the community gathering.
Frank Weldon Jr aged about 55 was found shot to death in his front yard on South Animal Road at about 10 15 a m Thursday June 18 by neighbor Don Still. A deer rifle lay between his knees and a coroner's jury ruled the death a personal safety related gunshot wound. Funeral arrangements are pending with Heather Mortuary.
Hidalgo County educators Mrs Ruth Russell and Mrs Pansy Bonar will join Mr Freeburg as a state delegate at the 91st annual National Education Association meeting in Miami Beach June 28 to July 3. About 3 500 delegates attend with 7 000 attendees overall. The convention features panels on free learning, textbooks, loyalty laws, television in education, UN and UNESCO teaching, and a world premiere film Skippy and the Three R's. NEA traces to 1857 and includes 4000 local and state associations and over half a million members.
State Police report two traffic accidents near Lordsburg New Mexico. Albert Landolt 40 Belmont California driver of a westbound car fell asleep and overturned on Highway 86 eight miles west of Lordsburg with no injuries. H C Layton Red Rock New Mexico drove a 1941 Studebaker east on the wrong side of Highways 70 and 80 hitting a round bus. Layton charged with driving while intoxicated and Layton’s car sustained about 150 dollars in damage.
David Daniel Warren Sr. died Friday evening June 11, 1953 after a brief illness. Born April 15, 1886 in Mayfield Texas, he lived near Brookhaven and farmed before marriage. He wed Ora Watson on July 10, 1908 and had two sons Alton B. Warren and David Daniel Warren Jr. The couple moved to Separ New Mexico in 1917.
The Southwestern New Mexico Golf Association schedules its third regular tournament at Hurley next Sunday June 21. Charles Stretz, association president, reports registration closes at 9 AM. Past winners include Paul Kimball of Deming in Lordsburg and Harry Althaus in Ft Bayard, with Silver City winning team play at Lordsburg and Ft Bayard team results pending.
A children parade is set for Saturday afternoon June 20 assembling at the old high school at 5 PM and marching from Penn Street to Railroad Ave to the fairgrounds. Prizes include a buckle from McKinney and White Saddle Shop and belts from Marlins Saddle Shop plus a bulldog hood ornament from George Phillips Plymouth DeSoto dealer in Douglas.
Lordsburg defeats Pirtleville 9 to 8 on the Indians home field in a tense nine inning game. Madero and Amarillo pitched well. Diaz and Renteria each had three hits for Lordsburg while BR Aguilar drove in three runs for Pirtleville as the visitors fumbled seven times and stranded runners.
Local Oddfellows and Rebekahs hosted an association gathering at the American Legion Hall last Saturday night. Sixty one members attended, including guests from Deming Silver City and Bayard Lodges. The Rebekah ladies prepared and served a delicious dinner, with music provided by Mrs Ed.
The first Kids Rodeo of the season will be at Hidalgo County Fairgrounds on Saturday June 20 at 8 p m. Open to youths from Hidalgo Grant Luna New Mexico and Cochise Greenlee Graham Arizona with no entry fee. Entries due by 6 p m. on rodeo day. Awards include high point trophy for boys and girls, event first prizes, merchandise for 2nd and 3rd places.
A rushed newspaper editor mixed fragments into a comic public notice claiming William Smith and Lucy Anderson were disposed at a barn auction in front of 70 guests, with animals and farm gear, a grass rope wedding, a plow honeymoon, and 200 chickens, ending with a jokey remark about mistakes.
Mrs. Lola Jones and Mr and Mrs Co P Wayne with children visited El Paso and Carlsbad last week to tour the Carlsbad Caverns.
