In a tough Sunday clash at Fierro field Lordsburg edges Fierro 27 to 20 after a late scoring burst. Gandara led Lordsburg with two hits and strong pitching, while Fierro’s offense distributed hits across the lineup with Bustillos and Cordova among key players.
A fragment notes that the Ward unit will receive more equipment soon. A truck from Albuquerque was en route Monday morning to bring another vehicle for the unit.
The writer extends thanks to the Lordsburg Fire Department for prompt and efficient help at their farm early Monday morning to extinguish a blaze threatening an alfalfa hay lot. One stack was lost but the fire was kept from spreading to other stacks. Sincere thanks to Ned Booby Williams for a job well done.
Superintendent Wesley Freeburg has been selected as a delegate for the Southwest New Mexico Education Association to the NEA 91st annual meeting in Miami Beach, Florida from June 28 to July 3. The panel will discuss Next Steps in Improving Educational Opportunities for Rural Children and Youth with about 3,500 delegates expected. Other panel members include George Barnes, Florence Bohr, Wesley Eastman, O P Richardson, and D E Williams.
Ground water in the Animas and Playas Valleys shows net declines in 1952. Measurements by the Geological Survey with New Mexico State Engineer show the Animas area about 35 square miles, ten miles northwest of Animas and twelve miles southeast of Road Forks, with water levels dropping more than a half a foot. Increased irrigation pumping caused the year’s greatest decline, continuing a downward trend.

The Post Office Department announces new box rent rates effective July 1 for offices with annual receipts between ten and forty thousand dollars. Box 1 rises from 60 cents to 90 cents, Box 2 from 75 cents to 1.10, Box 3 from 1.00 to 1.50, and Box 4 from 1.50 to 2.25.
Lordsburg and Hidalgo County will be promoted at the national Elks convention in St Louis Missouri July 5. The local lodge will display pictures products and merchants in a lobby booth with folders and greetings supplied by the Chamber of Commerce.
Inez Gutierrez drowned while swimming in a lake in El Centro California on June 7. Born in Lordsburg April 20 1928 he attended Lordsburg Public Schools and served two years in the army before being discharged about six months ago. He worked as a mechanic in El Centro. Bodies arrived Wednesday afternoon. Rosary and Requiem High Mass were held for him and survivors include his mother Mrs Rosario Navaarid and brothers Ted Jimmy and Merced Gutierrez.
Schedule outlines six games per team with equal home and away starts. Each team plays at least two games weekly, sometimes three. First games list Banner Mines versus Hatch and Poco versus CPS on Wednesday June 10 with Hatch hosting Poco, continued on Page 9.
The Elks Club will host a Flag Day ceremony at their hall Sunday at 3 p.m. A program includes a high school band, Star Spangled Banner, tributes to the flag, and a history of the flag. The lodge established Flag Day and lodges nationwide have held ceremonies. the Elks donated a flag pole to the school last year.
Captain John Bradford Jr of the New Mexico Highway Patrol received a patent for the Flat Tire Signal Indicator. A steel wire on each wheel triggers a red dashboard light when a tire is low or flat, alerting the driver and aiding trailers primarily but useful on cars too.
