On Flag Day the Motor Transit Company offered free transportation to the army camp and back to the public. The 60 passenger bus carried 743 passengers in the afternoon, a generous act well received.
The Past Matron's Club met Friday afternoon at Mrs. Iivia Wells home with several members present including Mrs. J Augustine, Mrs. A. L. Green, Ms. May Hanner and Mrs. Alvin Parker.
Mise Nell Kincheloe daughter of Mr and Mrs R W Kincheloe of Bisbee formerly of Animas Valley married Garner Barnett of Bisbee on June 7 in Warren Arizona. The ceremony conducted by the Methodist pastor drew 200 guests with the McClusky family attending from nearby, and the couple will reside in Bisbee.
Mr and Mrs Cleo Woods of Tyrone, noted authors who reside in New Mexico mountains, attended Flag Day. They traveled with John C O Leary, secretary of the Grant County Chamber of Commerce, and Miss Mary Alice Gale, physical director of the State Teachers College. The Woods couple publish widely in national magazines and are well known to local readers.
Local camp soldiers will perform a squad drill at the La Fiesta dance hosted by the American Legion Post. Admission is 1 shilling, soldiers free, ladies admitted free. The event takes place Saturday July 4 at La Fiesta.
Supt J Cloyd Miller and his family were guests of Dr and Mrs C B Austin on Flag Day. Miller, trained at Ft Huachuca, has been called to the colors if he passes the physical. Friends in Lordsburg await the examining board’s decision.
Mrs. Susan Cosper died last Wednesday night after a week in Lordsburg Hospital. She was about 84 and lived on various southern county ranches since 1922. She traveled by buggy until her burros died. Heather Mortuary handled arrangements until nephew by marriage Hadley of Pierce, Arizona had the body laid to rest in Douglas beside her husband.
Game night for the men in uniform will be held Friday evening as usual with Mrs. Thelma Ross in charge.
Lt. Col. Lundy selected banker F. E. M. Brickley to deliver a Flag Day address at Lordsburg Army Camp. Due to a duduster he offered excerpts focusing on soldiers as neighbors, the flag’s origin, and defense of liberty, with reflections on Corrigedor and Bataan.
Norman W. McClusky has been advanced to the chief's chair as local area engineer replacing John H. Veale. Formerly Assistant State Highway Engineer, he is noted as one of the state's best and came to Lordsburg shortly after the camp opened. Mrs. McClusky arrived from Santa Fe and the family plans an indefinite stay. both were popular Hidalgo county residents.
The Hidalgo Local Board received a Selective Service memorandum ordering immediate mailing of occupational questionnaires to men born between April 28, 1887 and February 16, 1897, in the fourth registration from April 27, 1942.
Ten men departed Lordsburg by bus at 3 p m on June 15 to the Reception Center at Ft Elias for induction on June 16. The group had previously undergone physical examinations in March. Names: Gerald Poller George Veden A J Byers Jr Fred Snyder John William Harper William Dale Budner Benito Vela George Eddy Norman Wright Alfred Golinga.
Mrs Jarvis Van Noy daughter of Mr and Mrs A T Johnson of Animas died in Los Angeles and was brought to Lordsburg for a funeral from the Baptist Church with Rev L D Cochran officiating. Pallbearers included Coyt Hackett and Walter Dunagan. She leaves a husband and wide kinship in Animas. She joined the Church of Christ in 1927 and was buried at Mountainview cemetery.
The President endorses a nationwide halt of retail business on July 1 1942 to dedicate fifteen minutes after 2 p m for selling government stamps and bonds. Hidalgo County is urged to stock stamps and buy bonds directly from post offices or the First National Bank.
Announcement reports the marriage of Miss Alice Butler daughter of Mr and Mrs J K Butler of Deming to Buck Moorhead foreman at the U Bar ranch near Hachita. Rev Frances Wheeler officiated. After a two week honeymoon through Arizona and California the couple will reside at the U Bar ranch.
Sunday June 21 is Father’s Day and Lordsburg men are invited to a special service at the Baptist Church. The notice calls for every man to attend, stressing masculine leadership in the home and church and noting God’s use of men in emergencies and church beginnings.
Lt. Col. Lane B. Cooke of the Army Medical Staff met with local doctors seeking recruits for the Army Medical Corps. He carried signed commissions for 21 to 44 year old doctors and 21 to 27 year old deniiates, but found no local candidates and departed for Silver City after obtaining two applications from Deming.
Mrs. Dorothy Hunter of the U S Employment Service arrived from Silver City Tuesday to survey local conditions and plan a new office. She now heads three counties Hidalgo, Grant and Catron, while Luna County shifted to the Las Cruces district due to transportation facilities.
Mrs George Jones of El Paso spent last weekend with her mother Mrs Marie Moon in Lordsburg.
Mrs. C. A. Lundy and her mother Mrs. H. B. Withers traveled from El Paso to stay over Sunday with the commanding officer and to attend the flag raising ceremony on Sunday afternoon.
For two weeks a fine vacation Bible school has progressed at the local Baptist Church. Children are doing fine work and enjoying it. Tonight at 8 p.m. commencement exercises will be held. The general public is invited to attend.
Mrs. T. A. Kerr ends two weeks at the Kerr ranches and returns to the Hidalgo Hotel.
Lordsburg officials praise M. M. Sundt Construction and L. M. White Contracting for timely, quality work on the Lordsburg cantonment. Payroll for labor runs around 60000 dollars weekly, with strong local purchasing and broad support from Tucson leaders for future contracts.
The Rancheros de Hidalgo elected Sherwood Culberson as president Robert M Reynolds as vice president and Paul Hudson as secretary treasurer The executive committee includes Geo Cureton Tom Clayton and Rex Kipp Sunday rideshoes at 2 40 pm will offer riding and roping contests at the fair grounds with admission 2 for adults and 16c for children They will skip July 4 entertainment but join Silver City rodeo with a woman announcer Mrs Tom Threepersons The Hidalgo County Ranchero will take part in the Silver City celebration.

Grace McDonald Phillips prominent in Woman's Club Business and Professional Women's Club and Republican circles died Friday at her Roswell home. She had led Chavez County Bar Association as president.

Ira Sanders nephew of Claude Sanders arrives Tuesday in Honolulu to visit Mr and Mrs Claude Sanders. Mr Sanders a six year service veteran from Gaffney South Carolina heads to Washington DC to take a defense job appointment.

Edward Clark, son of Ralph and Mrs Clark, lives with his mother and grandparents while his father serves on defense work in Alaska.
Milew Alexander and Billie Patterson of Miami Arizona were married at the Pnaptint Church in a double ring ceremony Tuesday June 16. The couple left for a honeymoon in Mexico and Texas after the ceremony.
Mrs H K Scofield and Mrs Alan Koff returned Sunday from Albuquerque after attending the state convention of the Business and Professional Women’s Club Federation. Twenty of twenty three clubs were represented with program highlights including speakers Dr Clyde Eagleton and Miss Dorothy Woodward plus awards for Carlsbad and Albuquerque clubs. Next meeting will be in Raton.

Mr and Mrs Claude Speer have returned from an extended trip east and will stay ten days in Henderson Texas If asked Claude prefers Lordsburg climate
Ed Patton aged 103 formerly of Lake Valley arrives in Lordsburg with his son in law First Set L. M. Ayers. He is identified as the oldest resident in the state. Patton drove a supply wagon at age 22 during the Civil War.
Sugar canning registration occurred in the court room on Tuesday and Wednesday with few attendees. Late registrations created a rush and Mrs. Young announces one final session next Monday June 22 to accommodate those still wanting to register.
Rev. L. D. Cochran announces a church program at the Baptist Church next Sunday evening June 23. Students from Portales under Walker Hubbard will perform to draw attention to the Baptist Children's Home. A silver offering will be taken and the public is invited.
