Prominent New Mexico Woman Dies After Long Illness
Effie Carmichael of Las Cruces died early Monday after a long illness. Born August 1, 1897 in Pinon Altos, she moved to Cruces in 1934 and helped found the Thomas Branigan Memorial Library in 1985 serving as its first librarian. She belonged to the Women’s Club and Delta Gamma, and was active in the Episcopal Church. Survived by husband Horace, five sisters, and one brother, funeral services were held Tuesday at Nelson Funeral Home with burial in Masonic Cemetery. She formerly taught in Valedon and was the daughter of James W. Jackson, mine superintendent at the 85 Mine before Calumet and Arizona takeover.
