Mrs W P Churchill entertained several guests with a Mexican dinner at her home Monday evening. The guests included Mesdames J C Saffold A J Warren and F F Northman with Mrs Saffold acting as host. Mr and Mrs Robert T Roach left for Rising Star Texas to visit his parents for fifteen days. The Pulp accompanied them and will remain with grandparents until term begins. Pvt Reyes of the M P Co will spend his furlough in San Antonio.
Pvt. Speck left Friday for Michigan where he will visit friends and relatives during his furlough.
First Sgt Overton arrived back from St Louis after a 1% day furlough enjoyed during leave.
A lively softball contest on June 11 at the Post diamond features 310 Company defeating Headquarters 14 to 12 after a strong first inning. Battery: Ronda and Clayton for 310. Weinberg and Romanese for Headquarters. Umpire Lt. R E Erisman and base umpires Lt. E O DeCamp handled calls. Next game Monday pits Headquarters against 411 Company.
Mr and Mrs Henry Clark of Lordsburg learn their son George Clark was wounded March 31 in Tunisia and later sent to Fort Devens Massachusetts. A telegram says he will soon be home on furlough. The Clarks are well known locally with Mr Clark a miner and Mrs Clark a church helper.
Earle Kerr chief of the Income Tax Division and Mrs Kerr arrive on official business to Santa Fe. The Taxpayers Association of New Mexico praises his department for excellent work in reporting state affairs.
Mrs W D Hall and her son Jack visited and were dinner guests of Mrs Mary Lee Fairly on Saturday.
George H Maltom Jr a U S Navy technician and Geraldine Hale were married in a double ring ceremony at the First Baptist church. The groom wore his Navy uniform and a reception followed at the Haltom home on West Railroad Avenue. The couple planned their honeymoon trip to Tucumcari and then to the Pacific coast station.
The Birthday Club held its final meeting of the term at Mrs. L. F. Scofield’s home on Monday evening celebrating Allan Bowman and Mrs Scofield’s birthdays. The event featured Monte Carlo Whist with Allan Bowman and Mrs Alton Warren winning high scorers and John Bradford with Mrs H H Bryant taking consolation. Ice cream cake and tea were served, with attendees including Mr. and Mrs. John Bradford, Mr. and Mrs. Allan Bowman, Mr. and Mrs. Creighton Bowman, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Hudson, Mr. and Mrs. H. H. Bryant, Mrs. Alton Warren, Mrs. Marshall Fuller, and Mrs. H. F. Scofield.
Rufus Buddy Wamel graduated from the University of Southern California in mechanical engineering last February and was called May 7 to enter the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis Maryland. After four weeks of training in Navy and Marine engineering he will be commissioned as Ensign and sent on active duty.

Col Louis A Ledbetter tours the Lordsburg Internment Camp garden where ten internees grow fresh vegetables in 7 1 2 acres inside the camp. He says irrigation from a 300 foot well yields five to seven hundred dollars per acre in crops like carrots beans radishes onions squash and lettuce. The garden demonstrates potential for large scale irrigation of arid land and feed crops like alfalfa. The Army emphasizes water as a life-giving resource and urges civilian adoption.
John G. Pope aged 66 died June 14 after an automobile accident. Funeral from Heather Mortuary with Rev. F. R. Poage officiating. Music by local performers. Burial in Mountainview cemetery. A Tennessee native, he settled in the county about ten years ago and left a son, J. G. Pope Jr., of Tucson.
The Pythian Sisters postponed their quilt sale until fall. The quilt, donated by Mrs. L. P McHalffey, will raise funds for the Red Cross kit bag program. Knights and Sisters plan a covered dish supper at the Ownby residence in the near future.
A group from the Portales Children Home will present a program at the Baptist church Tuesday night June 22 at 8 o'clock. This marks their annual state tour. Everyone is invited to hear and fellowship with this fine group of boys and girls.
A Wednesday U B O dance went ahead with about fifteen couples after the UBO Caravan failed to arrive. Word then said they would not be at Camp, so the dance proceeded. A picture show is planned at the hall tonight.
A Roswell crew sheared about 9,000 sheep using machines and averaged nine pounds of wool per animal. The entire clip sold for roughly 39 cents per pound, yielding about $3,300 in total sales.
The New Mexico Office of Price Administration announces community ceiling prices for over 500 grocery items in Hidalgo Grant and Luna counties effective Friday June 18. Stores must post class designations and ceiling prices by brand grade and size. Housewives urged to learn the list to identify maximum prices, with Class I II and Close TV classifications defined by annual sales. Mrs. Alan Koff hosted a four table bridge party at her home Tuesday for Mrs. Harold Scofield whose birthday is Wednesday. Ice cream and birthday cake were served and Mrs. Scofield received many gifts. Guests included Mrs. P. M. Chase and others.
Lordsburg Rainbow Assembly Nos 17 returned from Grand Assembly in Albuquerque. The group was honored with three appointments Miss Betty Reynolda named Grand Nature Miss Lois Ewing Grand Representative of New York and Miss Briedell Lacy Grand Representative of West Virginia. They held a regular meeting here Tuesday evening and initiated one new member.
Mrs. KB. M. Brickley arrived in Lordsburg Tuesday after an absence of several months. She taught in Seward Alaska high school during the interim and has sold her home to Mrs. John Dorrance. She plans to move furniture to Carlsbad, her former home, and will be at home with Mr. Brickley at the Hotel Vidalgo upon return.
Mrs A L Green Mrs J B R Poindexter Mrs H L Scofield Patsy Crouch and Annabelle Poindexter joined a Sunday trip to Santa Rita. Scofield and Patsy visited Beulah Harpham while the others called on Mr and Mrs Ralph Clark. Poindexter and Eddie Clark shared a birthday, their God mother relation noted. They enjoyed cake and ice cream.
Mr and Mrs John T Muir with Mr Jex Kipp and son William and guest Mrs Elsie Kipp visited Saturday at the C KF Fuller ranch. They went to Silver City on Sunday and toured the Whitehill home on the Rim road noted as a remarkable natural construct.
An oversight at commencement left unpublished the honor student award for Miss Anna Beth Ewing daughter of Mr and Mrs P M Ewing LHS senior in the class of 1943 She was recognized as the top student and received a 25 dollar scholarship from the B and P W Club and the citizenship award from Dr H H Conder
Miss Tommie Jones is back home after an extended visit with her parents in Tennessee.
Ensign John oger George son of Mr and Mrs R K George Lordsburg received his commission at 3 50 p m June 9 at the United States Coast Guard Academy New London Connecticut and at 6 40 p m married Mina Frieda Coffey daughter of Mr and Mrs J G Coffey also of Lordsburg The couple met during Beta Sigma Phi sorority engagements prior to her resignation from a federal post The ceremony was in the Baptist church parlor New London with attendants Ensign Robert Adams Hartford Ensign Charlie Johnson Phoenix and Miss Marjorie Trogan Alliance The bride fleet received social courtesies before leaving for New London.
The Rancheros de Hidalgo held their annual meeting at the courthouse on Saturday afternoon. Officers elected for the coming year include Ernest Short as president and Elbert Jones and Paul Hadon in key roles. A discussion outlined 1943 activities, with no definite plans beyond possibly a rodeo in the fall and plans to support Silver City on July 4.
