Mrs. E F Quillen hosts a noon luncheon for her birthday on June 16 with guests including Mesdames Churchill Safford Warren Northman Ellis and Stele. Gifts are exchanged and a playful spanking is noted before departure. Mrs A L Rodriguez of El Paso visits with Captain and Mrs Warren and introduces three month old Cleo Lee before heading back Friday evening.
Mrs Hansen the wife of Lt R E Hansen arrived from Seattle June 13 to be with her husband in Lordsburg. Her sister Buzz Simpson accompanies her and will stay until Monday evening when she will return home. A trained nurse travels with them. They boast of a productive Victory Garden back home.
Miss Grace DeCamp of San Diego arrives Wednesday June 16 to visit her brothers St. E. C. DeCamp and family at 80 Dr. Paul T. DeCamp. Dr. Paul T. DeCamp is affiliated with Baylor University Hospital in Dallas Texas.
Camp and Dr Paul departed Friday evening for their listed travels while reporting an enjoyable time in Lordsburg Mrs Garrett and children now reside in Silver City the family moved weeks ago and enjoy their new home Mrs Garrett has resumed summer school studying art and other subjects the children also attend school each morning the mother and two sons head to school daily and the family’s routine prompts wonder if they ever play hooky
A June 19 Officers Club dance drew strong crowds despite the heat. Two new orchestra members boosted energy while Lt Hughes surprised guests by playing sax in the orchestra pit. A late supper featured hot dogs, corn, salad, pickles, olives, cake and coffee.
A brief note hails Mrs L J Baleh a grand master of fine cooking from Louisiana not a Pollyanna inviting readers to drop in for coffee at her home someday.
Lt Hughes is offered Sax lessons by L J Balch a 14 year old son of Captain and Mrs L J Balch The young musician is praised for playing like a veteran and producing hot notes.
A Friday night boxing event in Silver City featured Cpl Weatherford vs Pvt Capps of the 311 MPEG Company with Weatherford winning on decision. Medrano def Capella, Fullbright defeated Kid Rockie, and a draw occurred between Pvt Murray and civilian Lucky. Campbell lost to One Panch Cowboy by technical KO in round two. Lt Erisman refereed. A dance followed for the boxers.
The 310 MPEG Company defeated the 309 MPEG Company 21 to 11 in a Monday afternoon game. The previously scheduled game for last night was postponed and will be rescheduled.
A Mor man church picnic Friday night near Silver City drew boys from the Lordsburg Camp. A convoy of a truck with thirty or forty boys and five cars traveled to the site. Games and a camp fire followed with Mrs Williams on guitar as the group sang old songs.
Donald Johnson completes for his son Allen equipment for scientific large scale poultry farming. Starting with 100 day old chicks, they move to screened pens after three weeks and trade cycles repeat to yield two pound fryers in nine weeks. Fryers marketed with strict food safety and continuous sales projected.
Rev Wm EF Brown district superintendent will preach at the 11 o clock hour and report on church progress. Choir music and a good offering are hoped to help finances and fellowship. The message invites a strong attendance despite heat and vacations. Rev F R Ponge.
Jacob M. Martinez son of Mrs Ignacio Martinez promoted to sergeant in the Army Air Corps. Promotion occurred in early May. He is stationed at Walla Walla Air Field Washington after prior training at Moses Lake Washington.
J R Poindexter returned with Elephant Butte Lake fish as the Community Public Service staff gathered at the plant Friday for a fish fry. Attendees included Mr and Mrs Donald Johnson and their relatives, Homer Rountree, Elbert Coursey and Marsie, Sgt and Mrs Sam Hall, Huston Hurst, Jack Wilson, J R Poindexter and family, Roddy Poindexter, Sid Watson, George Johnson, and G W Sherwood of Silver City.
Mr. and Mrs. Louis Vallante and Gene Noce came from Morenci to bid Joe Noce farewell. Joe left Saturday for Ft. Bliss with other local inductees including Max Ira McCommis, Willard Karl Troupe, Ricardo Rico Alvarez, Albert Barboza Lopez, Jesus Policarpio Sambrano, Joe B. Gallegor, Reyes Villaloreg Aguilera, Edwardo Hernandez Botello, Clemente Trejo Carillo, Carlos Lopez Hernandez, Frank Chavez Varela, Roberto Munoz Barrera, Patricio Morales Camacho, Francisco Cortez Figueroa, Ramon Saldana Hernandez and Domingo Bejarano Villalba.
A group of young people gathered for a picnic at Cave Creek last Sunday. Names present include Mrs. Clara Kimbley Dr and Mrs James Baxter Jimmie Dick Mrs E J Malone Miss Gladys Gene Malone Miss Gladys Sapp Milton Malone Miss Alyne Griffin Miss Mary Lewise Noce and Sgt Kent Cooke.
Roy Painter of the U S Grazing Service visited Albuquerque with Claude Wood of the State Land Office and Ed Slade district grazier this week on official business.
The committee served Mulligan Stew as refreshments during a camp event. Boys from Camp joined in the fun including Cpl. Wieland HQ Company, Pvt. Wade 311, Cpl. Hicky 310, Cpl. Whalen HQ, Cpl. Pierce 309, all MPEG.
The Community Public Service Company employees created a large garden tract near the power plant using waste cooling water for irrigation. They grew diverse vegetables and kept chickens in a clean yard with an incubator, all off hours at no extra cost to the company. Leaders include J N Poindexter and son Roddy, Coursey, Jack Wilson, Houston Hurst, Sidney Watson, and Tony Moreno.
In Silver City a meeting of FBI and Southwestern officers heard FE M Brickley deliver the keynote address. D A Bryce called the talk the best the association had heard and relayed praise to Director J Edar Hoover in Washington for Brickley’s cooperation during the May 26 1942 Police Conference.
Lordsburg receives honors from the Inter States Streams Commission with Hon H Vearle Payne appointed by the assistant attorney J E Payne. A six year appointment was given to J E Payne as commissioner and the attorney earns 200 dollars monthly while the commissioner is paid per diem only at meetings.
Miss Opal Downing came back Monday from San Bernardino California where she attended the graduation of Miss Joanne Simmons.
Frank Weldon has leased the Marlin Hoggett manganese mine south of Animas and received his first government check for 660.38 for 15 long tons of ore delivered to the Deming stock pile. He mined the ore with helpers, now employs five men on contract, and plans to install mining machinery. A 106 pound manganese sample is on display at the Chamber of Commerce, touted as the best ore found locally.
Billo Fisher advances rapidly in the armed services and now holds the rank of Master Sergeant with a maneuvering detachment in Louisiana. He recently spoke by telephone with Lt. Myles Cohen, now a Company Commander at Claiborne Louisiana. Lordsburg youths show rising ambition and effort.
John D. Bingaman state director of the OPA with Robert E Bryant toured the southern part of the state stopping in Lordsburg about a minute on their way from Silver City to Deming. If John performs as well for the OPA as he did as head of the state Bureau of Revenue the state will be profited.
Mrs. Harold Bishop came home last Friday after several weeks away visiting in Louisiana.
Washington 1943 letter from Acting Chief of Staff Joseph T. McNarney to Senator Chavez outlines ongoing relief efforts for U S prisoners in the Philippine Islands. By Red Cross channels food clothing and medical supplies are moved toward Japan controlled routes via Gripsholm exchange ship with limitations and hopes for further shipments. The letter notes past shipments, difficulties, and the need for Congressional support to sustain aid for prisoners and their families.
Bob Athon of Silver City, a real estate and tombstone dealer, said on Thursday he could not brush his teeth due to a water shortage. He urged residents to consider Lordsburg where millions of gallons are available for use.
Mr and Mrs Ralph Clark and two sons from Santa Rita visited Mr and Mrs A L Green for Fathers Day. The other members returned Sunday evening while Tommie Clark stayed with his grandmother. Myre Weulah Harpham returned home to Bayard after visiting the Scofields.
The U S C hostesses for next week include Mrs J E Tavens on Friday June 26 Mr and Mrs A B Bowman on Saturday June 26 Mrs Homer Brooks on Sunday June 27 Mrs F Singer on Monday June 28 Mrs Mattie Conner on Wednesday June 30. Tuesday and Thursday are closed.
Douglas McFee returned home from Lordsburg Hospital on Tuesday. Frank Hindman was also sent home after his condition improved. Miss Gladys Cox had a procedure at the Lordsburg Hospital last Thursday. an emergency case she is recovering from.
Greyhound Corporation filed June 16 with the Civil Aeronautics Board to develop an Air Bus service using helicopters or similar craft to connect 60 000 miles of highways with existing routes. The plan adapts bus terminals to landing ports and maintenance, coordinating land and air travel to serve thousands of communities at lower costs, with pilots and mechanics drawn from wartime service.
Jaume C. Hayes, War Department chemist and engineer, on a return visit to Lordsburg said the local climate outshines every state and foreign locale after touring the nation and thirty countries. He noted plans to start work soon at the Kaiser Shipyards and spoke of a newly discovered explosive seven times as powerful as TNT.
Robert Hall Dickson son of Mr and Mrs Robert Dickson formerly of the C A Mine at Valedon married Missa Rosemary Hope of Minneapolis on June 12. Bobby visited here last year with his parents and younger brother.
Robert Swan Post No. 30 presented a large flag to Lordsburg public schools with an inscription declaring the flag will be flown day and night by the post until the present war is won. The note cites a recent American Legion order to fly Old Glory continuously until victory.
The First National Bank offers a limited free distribution of Withholding Tax Guides For Employees. The booklet includes withholding tables by wage brackets for weekly periods and outlines features of the current tax payment law.
Mr. and Mrs. Tom Upshaw and Mrs. Maude Freeman of Ani were Lordsburg visitors, arriving for a brief stay and touring local sites.
