Amid a long gathering the Virden High School Class of 1938 repeated that it was a grand time with warm greetings and fond embraces as former classmates exchanged memories and well wishes.
A high school class reunion drew about 40 valley residents and early-arrival guests to LeRoss Jones lawn for an Ig House gathering commemorating his birthday. Attendees enjoyed cool evening air, visiting and reminiscing while munching cookies and punch.
The reunion officially began at 10 30 Saturday morning with registration. About 40 guests boarded a straw padded trailer covered by a tarp and rode two miles to a shady spot on the grounds.
Organizers hailed the event as a big success as people waded in the Gila River and enjoyed a shaded picnic lunch. In the afternoon attendees visited relatives and local places of interest, sharing in a relaxed social gathering.
An early evening lawn dinner south of Virden Church drew a large crowd from Safford to Phoenix. Lark and Almeda Wilkens led the meal with Henry and Chloe Gondolfo assisting. The program featured LeRoss Jones, Albert Payne, Osborne Smith, Chester Oftensen, and W. O. Jones with memories of Virden School Class of ’38. A Sunday church gathering continued the reunion with musical numbers and remarks by returning attendees from Mesa, Benson, and more.
