New Businesses Flourish in Lordsburg Economic Revival

Sherri Arredondo reports a wave of new and revived enterprises in Lordsburg as at least twenty businesses opened or changed hands in the past year. Meat Blok, at 200 Shakespeare and Second Street, debuts June 7 under Robert M Barrera and son, offering meats and by products by the pound. William E. Tarry opens a CPA firm at 714 Main Street, with Rachel Craig providing bookkeeping and tax services. Sal and Octavia Gomez launch Sounds of Music downtown, with a game room, tapes, records, and soon home stereo and vehicle tape decks. an Ice Cream Truck service is planned. Other outlets include Sears on 9th Street, Dairy Queen, Trail Motel and Cafe, Davids Hair Studio, and Red Hat Cafe, all led by local residents, signaling broad local economic confidence. Over coming weeks these sites will be featured to highlight growth.

Lordsburg Included In Outlaw Trail Country

The New Mexico Economic Development and Tourism Department sent Outlaw Trail Country a list of 318 travel agents from 44 states seeking information on New Mexico as a travel destination. The SW New Mexico region including Lordsburg Silver City Socorro and Quemado benefits from a Travel Weekly insert that spurred requests, with New York leading inquiries and Texas ranking fourth.

Local Elks To Hold Flag Day Services

Flag Day services will be held Sunday June 17 at 2:00 p.m. at the BPOE Elks Lodge No 1813. Lordsburg Girl Scouts will present flags, and snacks and refreshments will be served after the services.

Oasis in the Desert Center Dedication Planned in Lordsburg

Hidalgo County officials set August 22 at 11 a.m. for the Lordsburg Welcome Center dedication titled Oasis in the Desert. The meeting approved bids totaling 10 000 for an Animas recreational grant, a half size basketball court grills and a water system. Hospital renovation funds were authorized with a 204 000 project cost to be county matched by 179 000 federal and 25 000 county funds. Highway Commission noted the dedication time and a Thursday follow up session. County Manager Tommy Anderson outlined program order and sponsor needs.

Lordsburg Board Chooses Bob Lowery to Fill Vacancy

The Lordsburg School Board in special session selected Bob Lowery to fill the vacated seat of Andres Elbcio. He may remain only if elected in February. Phil DeFoor and Charles Hayes reviewed three options on Public Law 94 142 for special education funding, with no decision made. The meeting closed with an executive session to discuss hiring non certified staff.

City of Lordsburg Acts on Weed and Rubbish Fires

The city enforces health and sanitation rules against burning weeds and rubbish within limits under ordinance section 8-3-14. Sheriff’s deputies will issue citations to curb pollution and breathing problems. City officials survey Railway Blvd to nursing home and Short Park to reduce dust and thank Harold Bishop for a cement culvert donation.
