Local Elks To Attend Grand Lodge Convention in Chicago

Local Elks prepare to attend the 87th Grand Lodge Convention in Chicago July 1 to 5. James H Kin past exalted ruler Fausto trustee Andy Anderson from Lordsburg will represent the lodge along with others. Over 50 000 delegates and visitors are expected from 48 states and territories including Hawaii Porto Rico Alaska Guam and the Canal Zone.

Sheriff’s Posse Hosts Jack Pot Calf Roping

The Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Posse sponsors a Jack Pot calf roping at 3 p.m. Sunday June 17 at the Lordsburg Fair grounds. No admission is charged and the event is open to all, marking the posse’s first activity since its February organization.

Paulos Receives Bachelor of Science at University of Arizona

Nicholas J. Paulos was among 1,141 graduates at the University of Arizona Tucson. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree at the May 30 commencement. Paulos is the son of James P. Paulos and brother of Ted Paulos, owners of the Lordsburg cafe. He studied in Buffalo New York and pre medicine at the university and plans to attend medical school in Colorado next fall.

Masonic District Meeting Scheduled June 16

All Master Masons urged to attend the 10th Masonic District Open-Air Meeting on June 16, 1951 at the City of Rocks, 28 miles north of Deming on the Hurley road. Barbecue at 5:00 p.m. Members asked to bring their own silverware.

Southern Pacific Depot at Duncan Destroyed by Fire

The Duncan Southern Pacific depot, built in 1883 and made of wood, was destroyed by a fire discovered about 7:05 am. Depot agent Robert Hemphill and his family narrowly escaped with belongings lost. The fire also damaged the adjacent Spur Bar building and stock. No loss estimate available. Temporary quarters planned in two box cars for depot staff.

Hearing On Rate Boost To Be Held In Lordsburg

A public meeting on June 19 at 9:00 A M at Lordsburg City Hall will inform Hidalgo County telephone customers about a proposed rate increase. Ingram Pickett of the State Corporation Commission will explain the rise and may arrange for a telephone official to attend. The event aims to gauge public sentiment before the commission acts. Pickett will also visit Grant County towns on June 18.

Womens Society of Christian Service installs officers

The back lawn of Mrs. Emma Scofield's home provided a setting for the annual installation of the Women’s Society of Christian Service on Wednesday evening June 13. The meeting opened with the president Mrs. Harry Swafford calling the session to order after minutes and reports were read.

Pythian Sisters Observe Flag Day Program

At the June 11 meeting the Pythian sisters presented a Flag Day program directed by Claude Fuller. They pledged to the flag, sang the Star Spangled Banner, and heard talks on flag courtesy before a solo by Emma Scofield. Refreshments were served by K B Rice and Jack Kirby.

Students Enroll At Western College

The summer session at New Mexico Western College includes 15 students from Lordsburg, 2 from Virden, and 1 from Animas. It marks the second year of graduate study offered there with notable Lordsburg entrants such as Robert Altuna Lupe Alvarez Ricardo Alvarez and others listed along with parental and guardian references.
