Hidalgo County is reinstated in the Drought Emergent Feed and Hay Program. The ASC will accept and process applications from farmers ranchers and stockmen through June 22. Authorized distribution of grain will occur via established feed grain dealers at a price of $1.00 per CWT.
Citizens in Animas plan the first kids rodeo to be held Saturday June 25 with seven events including tiedown calf roping team roping steer riding barrel race cowhide race and stake race. Contestants must be out of school for one semester. A dance at the Legion Hall featuring Pug Scott and her Molonians closes the day to benefit Animas schools.
The Lordsburg area fire department was called at 7:45 am Tuesday to a blaze in the frame home of B B Ware about a mile and a half west of Lordsburg on highway 80. The fire spread quickly. Ware could not save any property and all was lost. Fire origin undetermined.
Mrs Claude Fuller will present a student music recital Saturday evening at the Junior High School auditorium on Penn Street. Featured performers include The Dunagan Brothers Saucedo Mead Aituna Sylvia Fierro Ra Miere Brothers and Harriet Bishop.
Sixty five Brownies from Silver City Hurley Santa Rita Lordsburg and Deming enjoyed four days at Camp Thunderbird on the Mimbres River from June 14. They camped in tents learned songs and crafts, hiked and cooked outdoors. The staff of 24 included Mrs Margaret M Jones as director and Mrs Mireola Freeburg as assistant director.
Anna Gondera Peggy Moya Alice Lara Carmen Delado and Jan Louise Hill present two new dances one four tap and one full point toe. Students unavailable due to vacations Flickinger Sisters Alice Fierro Linda Hill and Raymond Estrada are excused. The public is invited to attend this musicale.
Miss Carol Dunagan daughter of Mr and Mrs J L Dunagan graduated with highest honors at Animas May 19 and served as valedictorian. She earned a New Mexico Western College scholarship for outstanding scholastic record and will study business administration in the fall at NMWC.
Chief Lalo Sanchez releases monthly activity showing 3,800 miles patrolled and 78 total citations. Sixty overparking fines at 1.00 each, two reckless driving cases at 25 plus costs, one intoxicated driver fined 100 with a one year license revocation, and another driver fined 5 for loss of control.
Five Lordsburg CAP cadets attend the summer encampment at Williams Air Force Base from June 4 to 12, a venture made possible by cooperation between the U S Air Force and Civil Air Patrol. A C 47 from Holloman AFB Alamogordo arrived at 9 30 a m Saturday June 4 to pick up the cadets, marking first large plane trip for many, as fluttery butterflies moved inside the aircraft.
Sheriff E N Jackson and Frank Stengle moved to Carlsbad on Wednesday to return a stolen car and prisoner to Lordsburg. The car belonging to Mrs Effie Powell was taken from the parking area by the Dewey Jones restaurant where she works on Saturday. The prisoner Chester White was brought back by Sheriff Jackson and Stengle drove Powell’s car.
Dr. John C. Mitchell announced the second dose of the South Polio vaccine will be given in Lordsburg for first and second grade children who had the first injection. Eligible pupils should report to Central School at 9:00 AM on Thursday June 16. A June 15 schedule lists Rodeo at 8:30 AM Animas at 10:00 AM and Virden at 2:00 PM for the second shot outreach.
Lordsburg will get a modern pool after the Las Cruces architects Hartger and Benner presented plans accepted by the council. Bids may open in July with contracts filled and work to start soon after. The 150 by 100 foot facility on the high school grounds includes heated water, a wading area, a deep section, and a varied depth deck. Estimated cost is between 50 000 and 55 000 dollars.
Local Elks Club participates in a national Flag Day drive. A program on Tuesday June 14 at 8 pm invites public attendance. Grand Exalted Ruler urges members to fly the flag over homes to demonstrate patriotism and pride in American liberty and justice.
The Liberal office will be closed Friday at noon and reopen Monday morning.
