Students On Trip From Grand Canyon Visit

A group including Jane Chase and Manuela Avalos traveled from Grand Canyon on a multi stop trip to Flagstaff and back. They described mining and sawmill processes in detail, noting machines, planks, conveyors, and loud factory noises as they witnessed the day’s journey and planned to report further next week.

Polio Second Shot Offerings Expand to Health Dept

One hundred eighty six children received their second polio vaccination at Central School on Thursday. About 125 missed follow up shots will be available at the Health Department in the courthouse on several Wednesday mornings, per Dr. John Mitchell.

Girl Scouts Return From Camp Thunderbird

Seventy Girl Scouts from Silver City Bayard Santa Rita Hurley Lordsburg Deming attended Camp Thunderbird June 5 to 15 following Brownie camp. Staff led by director Mrs Margaret Jones and a team including nurse Mrs Sweet Wills and others guided outdoor skills dancing art and first aid with tents meals and group activities among pine trees.

Foreign exchange students to be here June 25

A trip for thirty-one foreign exchange students begins in Phoenix on June 25 and ends in Garden City New York on July 18. They will make nine overnight stops, be hosted by residents in each location, and twenty one will stay with Lordsburg families. Ten students need hosting arrangements by June 27.

Social Security Earning Record Can Be Frozen

The 1954 Amendments let workers with total permanent disability freeze their earning record, not affect payments before 65. Samuel C. Anthony of the El Paso Social Security office explains the disability freeze may raise future benefits and instructs disabled individuals to mail a questionnaire.

Animal Kids Rodeo Set for Saturday June 25

The Idaho Valley area prepares for an Animal Kids Rodeo on June 25 at the arena in Animas with a 1 30 p.m. start. Lordsburg prepares for a homecoming clash at two o'clock next Sunday against Pirtleville after a 3 to 5 loss to Bowie last week. Lordsburg aims to avenge the defeat and draw a strong hometown crowd for the matchup.

Weekend Traffic Fatalities Shrinked 25 Percent

New Mexico traffic deaths on weekends dropped about 25 percent as education and enforcement cut the Sunday driver problem. Chairman James Lamb of the New Mexico Traffic Safety Commission said Saturdays and Sundays run 20 percent behind last years figures and credited defensive driving and courtesy on crowded highways. The campaign phrase Slow Down and Live reportedly cut fatalities in the first twelve days of the program to three behind last year.

Lordsburgs 75th Anniversary Plans Underway

The Lordsburg Chamber of Commerce committee meets weekly to finalize finances and events for the 75th anniversary linked to Old Timer's Day Hi dago County Fair and the Sheriff's Posse Rodeo. Plans include paving at the center of town a free noon barbecue and a Diamond Jubilee celebration with bids, road signs, bingo and dances.

Maverick Booster Club Meeting Set for June 23

The Maverick Booster Club will meet in the high school auditorium on Thursday June 23 at 3 00 p m. A football film of the University of Arizona versus Texas Tech will be shown. Refreshments will be served and all members and prospective joiners are welcome.

American Flag Birthday Observed Nationwide

Last Tuesday June 14 the nation marked the 178th birthday of the flag’s adoption with general flag displays. Congress adopted the 13 stripe design on June 14 1777 and the form remains today with minor changes.
