Monday evening the class sermon was delivered by Dr. Percy Knickerbocker of Trinity Methodist at Star Theatre. He spoke on a Parable of the Mississippi River urging students to draw inspiration from small beginnings and to keep going south. The audience included the large class and their families.
A student program at Star Theatre showcased vocal solos, drills, and an operetta with a large audience. Superintendent A A McLeskey led the ceremony while Alfred Brunk and Rev M O Williams gave invocations.
Deputy Sheriff W C Shugart reported in Lordsburg that the seven year old son of Mr and Mrs Miller of Rodeo accidentally shot himself with a pistol while playing with Weberth er brothers. The tragedy cast gloom over the community.
County treasurer to work on an art related project about road taxes next month. Mrs Isaac Van Meter and her little daughter are visiting relatives this summer.
R. E. Vandruff of San Diego, mining oil and capital interests, surveys Bosson Heela properties south of the city. He says Boston Heela Co. and Oeto Mining will operate them when business normalizes, with finances to back large ventures and several silver prospects eyed for development. He praises Lordsburg district as promising and notes his oil geology success in recent years.
Chairman R. W H Wamel and Commissioner A B Ross say the first three days of the board of equalization have gone well with cooperative taxpayers. They note many requests to adjust property rates and believe the aim is to do what is just and right.
Director General J A Rountree outlines a 3600 mile Bankhead National Highway from Washington to San Diego passing through Las Cruces Deming Lordsburg Rodeo Douglas Bisbee Tombstone Tucson Florence Phoenix and Yuma. He notes federal and state backing 975 miles approved and more aid projects than any other national highway.
Marshall M. Owens returned from San Francisco where he represented the Tucson division at the wage conference. He says he had a bully good time and met all the big ones.
Ground breaking held at 10 40 P M Monday June 6 led by Bishop H M DuBose. Church size 32 by 45 feet with 850 seat auditorium and 44 by 44 Sunday School room, cobblestone base and brick upper walls. Site at Second and High Streets. Heather Construction Co to build. Donations welcome to fund the project.
Since taking over the Last Chance mine the company reports strong development gains. Drifts on the 275 foot level yield ore averaging over 100 ounces of silver per ton in the west drift, with 6 to 14 inch veins. A 3 foot milling ore sample shows about 14 ounces per ton. Company plans to install a compressor and drills to accelerate development.
At a Friday meeting five men were initiated into the first rank of the Knights of Pythias. The group included J. A. Meklgin and four railroad workers from the 81, Mat MeGer, W. B. Horton, Kk. BF. O Brien and Ozeil McMeans. A luncheon followed.
Wm. P. Rider resigns after long satisfactory service with the 8 P Ry and plans private business on the coast. The Rider family leaves behind many friends here who will regret the departure.
The wedding of Harry Rosensetin of Lordsburg and Rose Cohn of El Paso takes place today in El Paso. After a Pacific coast honeymoon, the couple will be welcomed home to Lordsburg as The Liberal extends hearty congratulations.
Artie Webb is appointed as a new telephone operator. The announcement highlights her entry into the service and the role she will fulfill in the local exchange.
During a Hot Springs visit, the Ownby Allen party fished at Elephant Butte Lake where KB Allen hauled a carp 239 inches long and weighing about 14 pounds. The catch fed four Ownbys and two Allens, and Allen showed the original hook used to catch the fish.
Jim Darley a Lordsburg Mercantile Co. deliveryman and Mise May Woipslow daughter of H F Winslow married by Henry M O Williams at the bride's home on Sunday. They plan a brief honeymoon and will reside near the ball park in a Fairly residence.
Ira B. Thomson aged man who died recently in Benjamin Texas where he cared for his invalid father for years was a longtime employee of the X T Diamond A S A Dunagan W N Gibson and W J Wamel He was buried with full Masonic honors.
The family thanks friends who offered aid and sympathy at the burial of their son and brother Robert Swan. Special gratitude goes to the American Legion. Mary J. Swan and Mrs. EB. C DeMoss and Mrs. EB. Wood express appreciation.
The Co-Operative mill shipped its first 50 ton concentrate car on Saturday June 4 and reports a value over one hundred dollars per ton. Officials tout high recovery rates and rapid start up with only two operators needed for flotation. Development work continues with plans for a larger air compressor to sustain ore supply and accelerated mining.
The Willcox shuggers visited Lordsburg and were defeated 21 to 4 by Smiths Trokesome pussies. O'Brien Kerr Tyra Deek Baton Marsalis Cook Diaz McMeana and McMeans starred, with Cook from Fort Worth making a strong debut and Baton executing daring plays.
Rousons Bly Tucson note John Robson, vice president of the First National Bank, visited the area this week. He reports buying a $43,500 Tucson home for his wife and two children, and a Studebaker touring car along with a Ford sedan for the family.
Prominent engineer Carl F Schaber formerly with the Steel Corporation and classmate of Alford Koos at the Michigan School of Mines is spending several days at the manager Hoos observing the Lordsburg district. He appears to be contemplating a permanent investment, and would be welcome here.
Frank R. Coon represented the county commissioners at the bond settlement in Santa Fe and did mighty good work for the county in arranging the settlement.
G W Mitchell and associates report very rich ore samples from the Volcano group north of Steing. They shipped 60 tons to El Paso and have another load nearly ready. They plan a cyanide mill to treat all ore at the mine and expect higher concentrates from at the mine. ore shows values around 0 to 60 per ton across a 12 foot vein.
Regular meeting at Mrs W P Hill's home with Mrs Wagner presiding. A delegate was chosen for the October musical program at Hoswell. Three new members joined and officers elected for the coming year led by President Mrs M Chase. The club kept summer activities, gave thanks for cemetery work, and adjourned after refreshments.
JM McCarty of Rodeo and Frank Jones of Animas report rich silver claims near Antelope Pass in Hidalgo County. Assays from the properties are proving very satisfactory.
The Heather Construction Co. did interior repairs at St Joseph Church with Rev Father Power overseeing the improvements.
