Hidalgo County 1986 Primary Vote Totals Report
Voter turnout reached 65 percent on a hot sunny day. Governor Ray Powell ran unopposed in Hidalgo with 937 votes. Carruthers beat McMillian 105 to 39. Sheriff race winner John McDonald led Richard Mejia and Gene Moore with 618, 493 and 405 votes respectively. Other county results include Lloyd Payne unopposed with 177 votes, Missy Morelos winning county clerk 642 to 517 and 344, Noce defeating Martinez 856 to 507 for District 2 commissioner, Schimmel unopposed with 147 votes, and incumbents Thygerson and Chavez set for November. All other county offices are Democratic incumbents to take office January.

Lordsburg Hidalgo County Health Services reports Dr. Podrabarac will open dentistry services early next week in the recently remodeled hospital building. Appointments will be arranged via the Health Office by phone at 542-9391. The bond issue for a high school renovation is set for September 9 with seven months of work.

Elias P. Gomez age 81 died Thursday May 29 1986 at Tucson Medical Center. Funeral services were June 2 1986 at St Joseph's Catholic Church Lordsburg. He is survived by two sons Manuel Elias Gomez Jr of Animas and Robert Gomez of Playas and daughters Mrs Lloyd.

Jesse Liles Named Pastor of First Baptist Silver City
Jesse Ray Liles, 36, has been called as pastor of the First Baptist Church in Silver City. His first Sunday service was June 1. Former pastor in Lordsburg since 1981, Liles is a New Mexico native, Marine veteran, and former radio announcer. He holds a magna cum laude bachelor’s and an MDiv from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. He and wife Gayla Sappington of Tucumcari have two children, Deanna Rae and David Nathan.

Embezzlement Charges Filed Against Couple
Local authorities arrested Robin Lois Shepard and Bruce Edgar Claxton on embezzlement charges for taking merchandise from Sounds of Music at 2nd and Shakespeare. They allegedly rented VCRs and cassettes and failed to return them, flagged by an empty case. Both were working at a Lordsburg motel, and Claxton is also wanted in Florida.
