Summer school registration at Lordsburg High School occurs June 3 in the high school library. Language Arts and Math classes run June 4 to July 3, with sessions of three hours daily.
Hidalgo County voters prepare to vote in the Democratic and Republican primaries next Tuesday with candidates for U S President Governor and numerous county and state offices. Democratic ballots list Carter Kennedy LaRouche Finch and uncommitted delegates for president with other races including U S Representative District Two Harold Runnels and Gil Olguin. Local races include county commissioners clerks treasurers assessors and sheriff with several unopposed Democrats. Republicans nominate for president with several candidates and unopposed local races including Corporation Commissioner Jimmie W. Glenn and Justice of the Supreme Court. District representation features Hidalgo County positions up for Districts One Two and Three with several contenders.
Lifetime Hidalgo County resident Joe Croom of Animal announces his run for county commission district three. He cites growth, development and hospital concerns, and notes his past as a teacher coach who won a Class AA state championship. He serves as Democratic precinct chairman and owns Save Way Grocery in Animas.
Hidalgo County Ambulance and Rescue receives six radio pagers through Region II EMS to alert EMTs during calls. Delivered May 21 with chargers and batteries, funded by a federal EMS grant and county match. dispatching through the Sheriff’s Office.
Longtime Hidalgo County resident Sims Bowers announced his candidacy for sheriff in the June 3 Democratic primary. A former U.S. Border Patrolman with 23 years in homicide, fraud, and theft investigations, he also served as a U.S. Deputy Marshal in riot control. Bowers, his wife Cora with Lordsburg Schools, and their three sons are active in local fraternal groups.
Hidalgo County announces polling sites for the Democratic and Republican primary on Tuesday. Lordsburg precincts meet at Central School Gym, Lordsburg Civic Center, St Josephs Hall, Virden Community Center, St Vincent's Hall in Rodeo, Animas Community Center, and Playas Community Center. Lordsburg city councillors weigh eliminating three administrative positions to fund a fulltime engineer. The proposal aims to reorganize staff to improve municipal engineering capacity and streamline operations.
Ena Mitchell announces to run again for Hidalgo County Probate Judge, seeking the Democratic nomination in the June 3 primary. A longtime Hidalgo resident since 1924, she previously served as probate judge from 1973 to 1977 and as county treasurer. Her civic work includes senior citizens programs and involvement with LDS Church, American Legion Auxiliary, Woman's Club, Sage and Land Extension Club, and local girl scouts.
The Lordsburg public pool failed to open as planned on Wednesday due to circumstances beyond control and will reopen Saturday May 31 at 1 p.m. Residents are urged to sign up for tennis lessons with more information available by calling the civic center at 542 9615.
