Fire damaged the kitchen of Mrs. Frank Stengle's home while they barbecued steaks. Neighbors and bystanders alerted the Stengles who rushed from the house as the fire worsened. Frank Stengle threw the blaze into the yard and sustained second degree burns on his hand and arm, treated at a hospital, then sent home.
Republicans will hold a meeting on Saturday June 6 in the Court Room at F Court House. The notice specifies location and date for the gathering.
City Council moved toward a $60 000 bond issue to be added to the 1949 issue with a 4.75 percent interest rate and a 2 percent flat service charge. The Sunset and Golden State schedules shift via El Paso Tucson and Douglas with new departure times and early arrivals.
Over 48 hours two fatal crashes killed four people near Lordsburg. May 31 a car traveling on the wrong side of the road collided head on with a truck near Alamogordo. driver Jesse Newton pleaded guilty to a lesser charge after manslaughter charges were dropped. A second crash four miles west of Lordsburg killed Mr and Mrs Lester Miller of El Paso when their car struck a truck driven by Merrell Brooks of Atlanta. Brooks suffered minor injuries and Miller's car was said to be on the wrong side of the road.
Traffic fatalities over the Memorial Day weekend totaled 458 nationwide, with 310 deaths from motor vehicle crashes and 101 drownings plus 47 other causes. The rate exceeded the National Safety Council’s pre holiday estimate by about 260. In 1958 weekend accidents caused more than 49 percent of traffic injuries.
Mrs Ida Bartlett won the liberal newspaper Who's Who drawing after correctly matching the name and 16 clues. Her $22.50 prize check awaits at the Liberal office and she receives a one year subscription. The Who's Who box will be at the Hidalgo Hotel Cocktail Lounge this coming week.
Three men Frank Lopez Tony Valdiviero and Pedro Ybarra were bound over to district court with 5000 bond each after a Wednesday hearing before Justice of the Peace C L Brown over an armed robbery at Hidalgo Motel service station around 3 a m on May 27. Berrellezo testified a masked man held a knife demanding cash while a second man rifled the drawer and others hid on the floor. Bejarano testified the trio once asked for gas money and Bejarano lent two dollars and charged it to himself. Police said 82 dollars vanished with a 20 dollar bill hidden among checks and receipts.
