Lordsburg Board Sets June 7 Meeting and UDAG Vote
The Lordsburg Board of Education will hold a regular meeting on Tuesday June 7 at 7 p.m. in the board room at 501 West Street to discuss allotments to city finances for the 1983 84 fiscal year. The council debated serving as the lending agent for a UDAG grant for Shady Grove with mixed views and a 4 3 vote in favor of accepting the agent role. Phelps Dodge Corp lowered its base price for whole plate electrolytic copper cathodes to 82 cents per pound immediately.

The May 27 vote was four to three on applying for an Urban Development Action Grant to help Shady Grove build a SO unit motel in Lordsburg. If approved, locals gain priority hiring, a $25,000 annual loan repayment to the city, and Shady Grove would pay the city tax despite being outside limits. A tourism information center bids and water line work are planned. Faye Moore won Hidalgo County Fair parade theme through a Name Your Parade contest run by the Lordsburg Hidalgo County Chamber of Commerce. The 1983 theme Out Of The Windy West was chosen from several suggestions by the Special Events Committee which promises an even better parade this year and awarded twenty dollars in prize money.

Lordsburg Luncheon Hosts NM Tourism Counselors
The Lordsburg Hidalgo County Chamber hosted eighteen New Mexico Travel and Tourism Department counselors for a May 25 luncheon at the China Doll Restaurant. The Lordsburg Sears Catalog Store at 109 E 9th Street has been sold to Fay F. Buvens who began running the business on June 1. Former owner James F. Dearman bought a similar shop in Loveland, Texas. No local changes are planned. Cleo Turrentine stays on to greet customers as Ms. Buvens says Sears' satisfaction guarantee remains a top reason to shop. The store operates as usual with plans for a future grand celebration.
