Special Council Meeting Schedule and Budget Hearing

A special council meeting will be held Friday at 10 00 A M. The budget hearing follows at 11 00 A M. A second hearing will address the proposed grant for Shady Grove.

Grant Sparks Controversy Over Shady Grove Grant

Tuesday morning a public hearing examined a 250000 grant for Shady Grove with Lordsburg as lender. About 50 residents and Shady Grove workers attended to debate benefits and drawbacks for the city, led by Mayor Hill and Sally Loveland of the National Development Council.

Summer Youth Employment Program Opens in Hidalgo County

Hidalgo County launches a nine week youth employment program beginning June 6 for ages 14 to 21, with 20 positions in Hidalgo County and an application contact at the courthouse in Lordsburg. Eligible youths must be U.S. citizens or eligible residents, meet low income criteria, and provide required documents. The program funds will flow via Shady Grove and Lordsburg governing bodies, with a final grant decision due July 31, 1983.

Services Held Tuesday For Sarge Bejarano

Juan Sarge Bejarano age 31 of Lordsburg died May 21 in Silver City. He lived in Lordsburg all his life and worked as a city foreman. He led the Galaxies Band and St Joseph Youth Choir and was active in Knights of Columbus Optimist Club Little League and CYO. Survived by parents Juan and Inocenta, wife Cecilia and her parents, three sons, two brothers, three sisters and many nieces and nephews. Rosary May 23 at St Joseph Catholic Church. Mass May 24. Burial Shakespeare Cemetery. Pallbearers from Galaxies Band. Honorary pallbearers include local officials and Super Sonic Little League Team 1980-83.

Lordsburg Hidalgo Chamber Names New Manager and Officers

At the May 12 Lordsburg Hidalgo County Chamber meeting Frances Calderon was welcomed as Chamber Manager succeeding Alene Buvens who resigned to run Floral Design. Manny Rendon resigned as President. Alene Buvens was elected to complete Rendon's term. Jon Brotz resigned as Director with no replacement action taken.

Hidalgo County Designated For Jobs

Hidalgo County and fourteen other counties were named as emergency jobs sites by the Employment Security Department. Secretary Daniel H. Lopez cited unemployment rates of 8.8 percent or higher and said programs across 14 federal agencies will run public works and services under the Emergency Jobs Act signed by President Reagan. The designation will be revised monthly and includes Bernalillo Catron Cibola Dona Ana Grant Luna Mora Quay Rio Arriba San Juan San Miguel Socorro Taos and Valencia counties.

Two Suspects Held After Bailiff Murder

Two hitchhikers James Kevin Ruppert and Darryl Edwards Coney are jailed on open charges of murder in the death of Richard L. Bailiff of Minolta Texas. Bailiff found near Silver City about 1 a.m. Monday after being shot multiple times. Police say Bailiff was picked up by the suspects on a Forest Service Road two miles off NM 90. Hidalgo County and Grant County officers plus U S Border Patrol coordinated the arrest Tuesday.

The Department of Motor Vehicles will be closed on Memorial Day, Monday May 30,. No services will be available that day and regular operations resume the following business day.

Lordsburg considers UDAG grant for Shady Grove motel

Lordsburg mayor and council discuss a UDAG grant to help Shady Grove construct a motel. City would apply and borrow about 250k to 275k from the city plus 750k private funding, with the city loan repaid by Shady Grove. Prospective impact includes local employment and payroll, with 40 jobs at the motel and 35 residents of Lordsburg. A second public meeting is set for May 27, 1983 at 11:00 a.m. following a 10:00 a.m. budget hearing. input from business community is invited and concerns about local competition noted.
