Train Hits Truck Injuring Driver Near Lordsburg Crossing
Robert Gonzales 26 of Pawnee Texas suffered critical injuries when his northbound truck collided with a westbound freight train at the Andersons Cattle Rest crossing east of Lordsburg. His rig was torn in two as he was thrown from the cab. Police investigated the wreck.

Contract Awarded For New Smelter In Hidalgo County
Phelps Dodge Corp awarded the contract to Brown and Root Inc to build a new smelter in Hidalgo County. The site lies about 23 miles south of State Road 9 and 10 miles east of Animas. Construction on a road from State Road 9 has begun. The $100 million facility is expected to be completed in 1974.

Rain Brings Relief After Long Dry Spell
Rain showers spread across the area ending a dry period since late January. A southeast town rain gauge recorded .55 inches in about two hours. At 8:30 p.m. lightning struck a power pole near the fairgrounds, causing a fire that cut power for about thirty minutes. The pole was replaced the next day.
