Jury Deadlocks In Caillouette Larceny Case

Judge Allan D. Walker declares a mistrial in the Caillouette Jr larceny case after jurors report deadlock on ballots 8-4 8-4 10-2 and 9-3 then 10-2. Hodges Resigns as District Attorney

Assistant District Attorney Joe Hodges has resigned to devote his time to private practice. Hodges is associated with the office and steps down effective July 1. Norman, the acting DA, remains in position as Hodges exits.

County Extension Clubs Plan 1960 District Meet

Hidalgo County Extension Club hosts the regular quarterly meeting at the Courthouse on July 24 to discuss the 1960 District III gathering. A cancer show for women will be sponsored with three films, Virden Club due July 30 and other dates pending. Hosts for the Fair were planned, with several club members attending.

Junior Police Members Enjoy Swim, Hot Dogs

About 200 members of the Junior Police organization attended a swimming party at the Municipal Pool followed by a hot dog feed on the school grounds. Donations came from Marie Anderson Sauce Do’s Food Market and UP-To-Date Grocery and Market. The Rev. and Mrs. Arthur Shaw and Mrs. Jim Smith prepared the food.

State Police Add Officer to Lordsburg District

State Police assign Patrolman Henry Houston to Lordsburg to aid Patrolman Joe Rutland in traffic regulation and duties. Houston, ex Albuquerque resident and recent academy graduate, will reside at 302 Second Street with wife Mrs Houston and daughter JoAnn. Lordsburg district formed after Chief Penn Winston appointment, under Capt. Joe Roach with Silver City headquarters.

Teachers seek housing as school term nears

During August many teachers will need housing for the new term starting late month. Anyone with a house or apartment to rent should call Superintendent Freeburg at 32 to list available accommodations.

1-H Club Annual Camp At Las Cruces

Four H club members prepare for the 35th annual camp at New Mexico State University August 4 to 7 with about 500 youths aged 14 to 21. Events include clothing food home economics livestock crops tractor meat judging public speaking and a dress revue. County delegates stay in NMSU dormitories and a banquet closes the camp on August 7.

Harber Heather, commissioned a colonel by Gov. Happy Chandler of Kentucky, will present colonelships to Joe Hodges Sr. and Judge C. L. Brown through Chandler's recommendation.

Two Auto Accidents Leave Two Injured on Silver City Road

Mrs Velma Anderson of Lordsburg a nurse at Fort Bayard Veterans Hospital suffered a broken right arm in a one car crash north of Lordsburg around 5 30 p m Friday. Investigators say Carl Hoyd driving a one ton truck left in front of her. She was treated at Fort Bayard then returned to Lordsburg. Robert E Rea son of Mr and Mrs N M Morrison is in Hillcrest General Hospital Silver City after surgery for injuries from a Saturday night crash. He said a truck forced him off the road, his car went over a bank and he is resting comfortably after the operation.

Local Little Leaguers Triumph Over Duncan 18 to 5

The Lordsburg Little League All Star team beat Duncan 18 to 5 last Saturday night. Payne started on the mound but walked four batters, then Murray finished the inning with Lopez pitching the rest. In other results Wimp's Service lost 11 to 1 to C. P. S&S, while Gene's Shell beat the Elks 6 to 1 after rain shortened play. Standings show Wimp's and Sick's near bottom with C. P. and Gene's rising.

Who's Who Contest Won By Dean Rutland

Dean Rutland son of Mr and Mrs Joe Rutland identified the mystery person in this week's Who's Who contest and wins the 22.50 Jack Pot. The box held 14 clues including a mistaken leftover entry from last week.
