Legion Nominating Officers Set For 1959 Meeting

The Post 30 Legion nominating committee selects officer candidates for 1959 60 terms including Harber Heather, Marshall Fuller first, Hood second, Williams finance, Brooks chaplain, Elmer historian, Lalo Sanchez junior, and Damon Dunagan, Joe Esquivel first, Hubert Felix second, W chaplain, Eugene Mont ward, John Robertson, Manuel Ramirez arms. A special meeting is scheduled Tuesday July 28 1959 at 7 30 p.m. at Legion Hall where members are urged to attend.

Msizo County youths from Catron Grant Hidalgo and Luna counties competed Friday in Reserve New Mexico. National Guard Payroll Boosts Lordsburg Economy in 1958

Lt. Jesus J. Estrada notes Lordsburg benefited from 32933.50 in National Guard payrolls during 1958 as full time civilian staff and drill pay support local shops. Major General John P. Jolly says New Mexico statewide payrolls exceeded 3 million with added purchases for supplies and services.

An All-Star Little League squad will face Duncan at home Saturday at 7 30. Previous week Slicks Sporting Goods defeated Duncan 4 1 on their grounds in a rain shortened two inning game.

City Budget Approved by State Finance Department

The State Department of Finance approved Lordsburg’s $453,765 budget for 1959 1960 at City Hall. General Fund $138,765 Water Dept. $54,000 Gas Dept. $361,000. Dr. John C. Mitchell urged aid for the district sanitarian. $600 was reallocated from unbudgeted property tax receipts to the health department.

Lightning Damages Doctors Office in Lordsburg

An electrical storm struck the office of Dr. H. W. Sellers in Lordsburg around 7:30 p.m. causing the sterilizer cord to burn and blacken walls. All lights were out in the two back rooms but no one was injured as the office was empty at the time.

City Sued Over Unpaid Employer Retiree Fees

John C. Hays executive secretary of the Public Employees Retirement Board files a district court complaint against the City of Lordsburg for failing to pay the employer's share for city employees not including police. The amount pleaded is 4254.77 plus 5 percent interest from Sept 1, 1958 to May 3, 1959. The suit asserts the city did budget for these payments.

McBee Acquitted on Assault Charge

Jim McBee of Deming operating well drilling rigs was tried in Judge Co. L. Brown's court on Friday July 17 on reduced assault charges. After testimony from Mrs. McBee Sheriff Pace and others, the court found for the defendant and ordered his release.

State Department of Motor Vehicles and inspectors intensify strict enforcement of house trailer registration under the 1954 Motor Vehicle Laws. March 2 1959 deadline applies. noncompliance leads to court orders, penalties, and 15 percent interest. Local license distributors aid owners in complying.

Junior Police Meet at City Hall Saturday Morning

Jim Smith announced all Junior Police members will gather at City Hall this Saturday morning. He also announced a swimming party and hot dog feed for members on Tuesday July 28 at 7 30 p.m. at the Municipal Swimming Pool.

Southern Pacific to abandon south line near El Paso

Southern Pacific plans to abandon the 209 mile segment between Douglas and Anapra New Mexico outside El Paso after a long range study found no economic justification. The 15 daily passengers on the line could not justify maintenance costs. traffic will move to the north line via Benson Junction with an application to the Interstate Commerce Commission to be filed Friday July 24.

Who's Who Contest Won By Chuck Harvell

Chuck Harvell won the Who's Who contest at week seven with 19 clues identifying L. B. Robinson and a $30 jackpot. His $37.56 payable prize will be sent, and his parents receive a free one year Liberal subscription. 265 entries were recorded with 122 saving the mystery personage and 19 clues.
