August 9 games in the GTTBill League featured National Guard teams in multiple outings. National Guard 4 toppled rivals as offensive bursts powered late rallies, while another inning push produced five runs to secure a win. The Miners posted a close victory, capping the slate with tight defense and a late scoring rally.
Chavez argues the metal stockpile plan offers little hope for New Mexico and West. war demand and production needs complicate the program as senators debate the defense and temporary nature of reserves.
Superintendent Freeburg provides opening week details. Faculty workshop runs August 24 to 26 with a faculty meeting on August 26 at 10 00 a m. Student registration is Friday August and classes start Monday August 30. A full school year calendar will appear next week.
Captain J R Bradford and Mrs Bradford depart Lordsburg for Las Cruces where his state police district headquarters will be. They came to Lordsburg in 1937, lived in Silver City, then returned, serving with eleven officers under his command. Their children Betty and Johnny will adjust to new schools and life in Las Cruces.
The Democratic gubernatorial candidate John F. Simms Jr and his wife visited Lordsburg Hidalgo County on July 24. A Hidalgo Hotel luncheon for about 35 attendees preceded an afternoon tour of county residents. A 7:30 PM City Hall rally drew over fifty people.
All members are urged to attend the weekly meeting on August 2 at 8:00 p.m. at the Elks Club. The group of officers will attend, and members should strive to wear Class B uniform where possible. Jack Spencer, Ist Lt, CO.
The Senior Band will meet Monday August 2 at 10 00 am to resume rehearsals. The Junior Band meets August 2 at 9 00 am and the Beginners Band August 3 at 9 00 am. Schedules will be distributed then.
The Union Department Store window display showcased eight weeks of summer shop program work supervised by A L Blanton. Ninety six participants including twenty one adults learned three times weekly, choosing preferred crafts and producing numerous finished items.
Local National Guard Battery C 716th AAA Bn prepares for a two week summer camp at Ft. Bliss starting August 15. The unit aims to add 80 enlisted men to build a new Lordsburg armory costing about 50 thousand dollars, with appeal to ages 17 to 45 and local business and parental support.
Mrs Mary Lee MelInnis Mrs Beth Ellsworth and Mrs Thelma Ross finished a four week social education course at New Mexico Western College Silver City They covered about 150 pages of text and the study received approval from the elementary and junior high divisions of the State Department of Education.
The Lordsburg Indians led 7 5 entering the ninth as Al Varado started a Guardsmen rally that put four runs across and gave Douglas a 9 7 lead. Lordsburg fought back in the bottom of the ninth but could only score one run, final 9 7 for Douglas National Guards. The game opened with no score in the first inning and Gray's run in the second started the Guardsmen. The Indians answered with two in the third and Ramirez allowed the Guardians to surge in the fourth with Arzate reaching on an error. The narrative continues on page 6.
The public is invited to an ice cream social this Friday evening July 20 at Mrs Emma J Scofield home. From 7 30 to 9 30 p m homemade ice cream and cake will be served on the patio. Proceeds go toward repairs at the Methodist church. WSCS sponsors event.
New Mexico drought relief moves forward with a large portion of the state declared eligible for federal aid. Grain assistance will include corn sorghum grain oats and barley with distribution via oat dealers to farmers to prevent herd losses. Prices undecided but may rise. government may subsidize and lend funds. Federal agencies ordered to speed aid. Commodity Credit Corporation will supply cut-rate feed from its stocks.
Two youths wanted for break in and entering in Arizona were captured at a road block set up near Lordsburg on Highway 70 by state and city police in the early hours of July 20. The suspects, driving a 1949 Plymouth, fled at speeds up to 110 mph through Texas Canyon before being stopped when a rear tire was shot out. They were turned over to Arizona authorities to face punishment in Safford.
