A sand storm reduced visibility on a highway near Lordsburg causing a collision between a 1949 Ford and a 1950 Lincoln. Turner of Wink and Weldon Loge Ian were injured, with no deaths reported. Property damage estimated at about 300 dollars for the Lincoln and 125 dollars for the Ford. Iowa State Police investigated.
Marston Reed, VA Representative, will meet veterans and dependents at the Hidalgo Hotel Lobby in Lordsburg on Thursday August 12 from 10 am to 3 pm. He will assist with Korean GI Bill training eligibility and deadlines including August 20 1954 for those lagging behind a 1952 cutoff.
The joint American Legion and Auxiliary meeting at the Legion Hall featured reports from Karen Steele Patsy Crouch and others about their experiences at Girls and Boys State. Youths attended in Albuquerque and Socorro where state city and county governance were simulated.
Alvin Stockton, Republican candidate for New Mexico governor, toured Lordsburg’s business and residential districts with county chairman Alvin Parker. He plans another visit before the November 2 election and urged continued federal aid to drought areas including Hidalgo County.
A strong windstorm and sandstorm swept Lordsburg last Sunday evening causing notable damage. The Carl Baker and Harvey Martin homes suffered after the cyclone moved from the north, breaking shingles and a window, flooding a bedroom, and overturning small outbuildings. The storm also knocked down 38 Mountain State Telephone poles near Highway 80.
Clifton pitcher Trujillo’s five innings of no hit relief with nine strikeouts backed by airtight defense keys a rain shortened six inning victory over Lordsburg Indians. Ramirez allows two early runs then settles, Clifton earns a 9 0 win in a well pitched, low hit contest.
The opening of school brings many teachers seeking housing. Those with houses or apartments to rent should call Mr. Free burg, Superintendent of Schools, at 32 or 412. Faculty workshop starts Tuesday, August 24. Student registration Friday, August 27 and classes begin Monday, August 30.
The chamber outlines items for readers including a new Old Timers Parade float plan and a member guide in circulation. It notes two new members Eugene Montague and others, plus a postal route talk with the District Superintendent about direct mail between Lordsburg and Animas and an ore stockpile application sent to the Office of Defense Mobilization for Lordsburg consideration.
Another letter has been written to the State Highway Commission urging action on U.S. 70 and U.S. 80. Local residents seek improvements and safety measures along the two highway routes.
Charles Ray Walters seven year old son of Mr and Mrs Charles Walters of Lordsburg was momentarily knocked unconscious when he lost control of his bicycle and hit a trailer in the underpass. He suffered bruises and a black eye though X rays at Hidalgo County Hospital showed no broken bones or contusion. He swerved to avoid a car after brakes failed and was startled into a fall.
Eighteen year old Frank Schmidt, son of Mrs. H Judson Mead, was seriously wounded when a .22 pistol exploded as he handled it on the Payne ranch near Lordsburg. The bullet traversed the abdomen four times, and Frank underwent a two hour and forty minute operation with a blood transfusion from his brother David. Doctors say his condition is fair and improving.
District 7 American Legion post commanders adjutants and officers met at the Mission Café in Deming on July 29 to appoint committees and plan the year. Bob Williams was named Naval Affairs chair and Harber Heather Grave Registration chair. R H Thornton district commander led the gathering with Ray Saucedo active from Lordsburg among attendees.
Mrs. J. A. Foster and Mrs. Wesley Freeburg attended a district board meeting of the New Mexico Federation of Women’s Clubs held in Las Cruces on Wednesday.
