The booster club will meet Friday at 7 00 PM at the Civic Center to discuss plans. City officials plan to declare August 4 as Joni Umphres Day in honor of the local figure.
City Council held a special session on July 18 addressing Mrs. Heidi Anderson's request for funding the Annual Soap Box Derby. The event is a one day affair with a total budget about 535.60 less than last year, advertising costs being the largest item. Fencing for the track will be erected by City and County crews using donated material. A five member committee will study funds from Marino Service Companies and recommend projects for a revolving loan fund limited to economic development. The resolution 85-8 was approved and the State DFA guidelines apply. The payback awaits a joint three party decision.
Joni Umphres, a 9 year old girl in intensive care after a kidney ailment and stroke, is the focus of a Lordsburg community fundraiser. Events include a BBQ, batting contest, jackpot roping, raffles, beef donations, auctions, and a rummage sale. Tickets available at local merchants. bank account opened for Joni.
America's largest copper producer Phelps Dodge reported an $11.4 million profit for Q2 1985, reversing last year's $20.6 million loss. Profit stemmed from cost cutting and higher Tyrone Morenci output as copper prices fell. The quarter saw a new New Mexico smelter open while Morenci, Ajo facilities closed.
Sheriff Billy Darnell reports a week of minor incidents for HCSD. July 17 Lynette Brown and Thomas M. Parra were booked for disorderly conduct. July 18 Tapia R Flora arrested for detoxification, Todd Alan Lewis for AWOL from the Navy. July 20 Bill Irvin Webb detoxification. DWI charges: Pablo A Castillo and Richard Neal Hickman. July 23 Antonio R Torres arrested for disorderly conduct.
The Lordsburg School System offers summer band instruction. On Monday August 5 fifth graders should report to DTMS between 1 and 3 pm for instruments and early arrivals. On Tuesday August 6 classes start with 5th at 1 pm 6th at 2 pm and 7th and 8th at 3 pm. Wednesday August 7 high school band meets at 6 pm in the high school band room. High school students who have not marched with the Mighty Maverick Band should report August 15 at 6 pm.
Hidalgo County hosts its second annual hot air balloon festival starting after daybreak Saturday with lift off at Dugan Tarango Middle School track. Balloons return Sunday and may land on the dry lake bed west of town near an X marked spot for a Fox and The Hound contest.
