A new urban rodeo concept debuts with competitors racing three wheelers. The first annual Three Wheeler Rodeo is scheduled for July 27 in Lordsburg Hidalgo County.
Sheriff reports drugs found in Kimala Anne Minard Bailey’s jail cell including Crank and a syringe with needle marks. Kelly Rex Green, 33, Box 159 Tyrone NM, charged with bringing contraband into jail. Bailey charged with armed robbery of Mr. and Mrs. Wilson on June 13. Other week’s activity includes several arrests for disorderly conduct, trespass, DWI, and marijuana possession. The Hidalgo County Fairgrounds hosts a six-event rodeo testing skill and speed with multiple age divisions. registration starts July 27 at noon.
The City Corner announces joint action with the Sheriff to stop dogs running loose and disturbing residents. Animal Control Officers will be scheduled to work nights and may wake residents to issue citations. Call City Hall or the Sheriff's Office with concerns.
A special Hidalgo County Commissioners meeting did not occur to discuss a contract with Desert Medical Services represented by Dr. Charles Maynard. Both sides remain hopeful for a signed agreement and seek DA review. Maynard needs more time to finalize his financial structure. No new meeting date was set.
A hearing to determine if Gene Ballinger should get a new trial is underway in Silver City. Ballinger was convicted of second degree murder in the 1980 death of Warren Uecker at Pine Cienaga Ranch near Mule Creek. John Rizzo testified about conversations with his former attorney and later received immunity in a plea deal. The judge set two more hearings to decide if jurors were unfairly exposed to newspaper articles.
Balloons from 10 crews converge for a two day event starting Friday at the Elks Lodge with a 6:00 p.m. gathering and sponsor pilots meeting at daybreak Saturday at Dugan Tarango track. Flights begin about 6:00 a.m. Saturday, ending at the dry lake beds with a ground X contest. Saturday noon features a burger fry and festivities including a three wheel rodeo and horse shoe tournament, followed by a La Fiesta dance with Country River Band. Chamber president A C Rodriguez urges Hidalgo County to support what may become an annual regional festival to boost community interest.
The Lordsburg Liberal announces a transition in type styles and page makeup processes. Most production will move to Lordsburg next week as a printing plant is installed. The switch follows the 1973 sale to current owners with a completion target in early August.
Lordsburg High School named Lyman Stough as head basketball coach and social studies teacher at a district meeting. Stough, a former assistant at Cliff under Pete Shock, is a Western New Mexico University alumnus of 1979. He announces a summer basketball camp for grades 9-12, with an 8 to 10 day schedule ending as Travis Lee’s football practice begins. Stadium improvement bids listed Stadium Unlimited of Thornton, Colorado as low bidder. Eagle Construction of Lordsburg also bid. Home economics appliance bids dominated by Bishop Lumber. Montgomery Wards lowest for dinettes at 299.99 and 6510 total bid. Other bidders included Bivens Auction Service, Western Auto, Sears Lordsburg, Whites Auto, Barbie’s Outlet of Deming, LaBee’s of TorC.
Willie McDonald the Booster Club president notes the membership drive started July 8 and invites all to join. Contact McDonald Kuenstler Kling or committee members Mora Arambula Williams Moody Kipp Gandara for details. Annual fee is 10 dollars per family. A general meeting will be held July 26 at the Civic Center to plan the booth for the St Joseph Church Bazaar August 17 and 18 and to discuss the Gordita Sale.
